atlanta isnt that big.. 415,000 maybe? its all suburbs. the sprawl from that city is beginning to cover over half the state of Georgia and there are suburbs in what like... 4 different states? Yes, every city has sprawl issues, some worse than Atlanta, but Atlanta's sprawl is a direct cause to the traffic problems, dirty air and water problems and even obesity. I know.. sooounnnnds crazy, but its nutz. i suppose it doesnt help adding over 120,000 people a year so there is a lot of unplanned growth, but the last thing that area needs is more people wanting the american dream and spreading the problems out even more |

If you are going to come to a large city in SoCal be prepared for some culture shock. You say you currently live in the country in NE, having never been there I do not know what it is like. However I shall make some broad assumptions. I assume that life there in NE is most likely nice and laid back, here in Socal (atleast in the large cities) life most often helter skelter. People here make a big deal about schedules and are often hurrying around to do one scheduled activity after another. Often you will have to play phone tag and coordinate schedules to get together with friends. Most likely you are thinking, "Ah I already do that!". I say no, not on the level that you will do here.
Also the culture here is very image focused, materialistic, and shallow. People some much time preening themselves and spending money to do so, more so than other places. While it is a very opened minded culture in some ways, it is also very exclusive. If you do not totally conform to a group's opinions, they will exclude you.
It may be hard to find very close and very good friends, you most likely will have many friends but they will just be above the level of acquaintances. This can be due to any number of the things mentioned above.
Oh and it goes without saying that is very crowded in the big cities in SoCal.
Obviously I have made some broad and sweeping generalizations here, but most likely you will find these things true. There are always people, places, and groups that go against the grain, but they seem like oasis' in the desert. The good thing about SoCal is that it is a really big desert so there are many oasis'.

I hope you have a college degree in a stable field, because if you dont you most likely be working long and hard to afford to live here.
Now for the good stuff:
EVERYTHING, I mean, EVERYTHING (well maybe not everything but it seems like it) can be found in SoCal. You like the beach, we got it. Mountians? Can do! Desert? Too Much of that. Etc.
Socially there are clubs of everytype, you can gamble, sports, outdoor activities, concerts, movie showings, etc. And if you look hard enough you can find many others who share your interests.
Food. The food is great here. You can find almost every staple food from any culture here and it will be authentic.
And the women. There are so many good looking women in SoCal, its unbelievable.
To give my opinions some semblence of credibility:
I have grown up in LA and SoCal, but I have lived in Hawaii and Indiana as well. I have spent signicant time in China and Tawaiian and less significant time in Mexico and Thailand. I have been elsewhere but for very short periods of time ( vacations and such). |

sorry! i lived in toucson and phoenix when i was little and i've been to the grand canyon a few times, i thought it was breathtaking:p
but now that u mentioned colorado, i agree. i've never been, but for some reason, when i think of a really good place to raise kids (other than another country, lol) i think of colorado...like denver or something. |

Montreal = teh win
Great social life, tons of job opportunities in a lot of sectors, GREAT EDM scene, great food, great shopping....The only drawback is a cold ass winter...But if you could brave that, you'll love living here, guaranteed. |

i wasnt aware i mentioned anything about how great colorado was. i just mentioned the ty desert cities who are in desperate need of water sucking the colorado river dry. now they want all the water from the great lakes. and denver is nothing special. the smaller of the major colorado cities are better, IMO. :p
honestly if i had to raise kids somewhere i'd probably stay here in the midwest and either live in milwaukee, chicago, madison or minneapolis, in that order. california would be nice, mostly weather-wise, but i think the negatives sort of out-weigh the positives. |

yes.. .the metro area.. i'm fully aware of the numbers. BUT in the city itself.. the CITY OF ATLANTA.. not counting any suburbs, its about 415,000
