In my opinion, MCs are important for certain styles of music.
High energy dance music, like dnb and hardcore require an MC to keep the level of energy in the crowd up. Many a time have I been casually dancing away to a hardcore set, when the MC shouts out some encouragement into the crowd "You're all superb, in wicked!" or whatever, and its got me full on stomping. I admit, sometimes they can get very annoying. Especially in hardcore there are a few E MCs who totally ruin a set (Listen to any Kevin Energy Liveset, amazing ability behind the decks, no need for MCing), but there are some good ones too. Quite often they say retarded things like "When I say DJ, you say Sy", but if you're a first time raver its fun to join in with that kind of thing. Hardcore and dnb raves are spectator raves, you get involved with the music and you need the MC for that.
Trance, hardhouse, or indeed any other type of music needs no MC!!!
At all.
Ever.
Except at the start to introduce and at the end.
I've got an Eddie Halliwell set from Dance Valley last year and some c**t keeps interjecting the tunes with, frankly, bollocks. Trance requires no MC to get the best out of it, in fact the MC ruins the sets, the dirtier, faster side of dance music like hardcore need MCs to create the right atmosphere.

ive never been to an event let alone one with an mc so i cant really comment. but when i have heard it on recorded sets its just been annoying and really hasnt fit. i.e 'give it up for armin van buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuren!!!!!!!!111'

recorded sets i'd really rather not have it because i prefer to hear the mixing and how its juggled etc. an example is this ecksman/dj rap demo i have. the mcing is very good and original, lengthy rhymes etc, but id just rather it wasnt there so i could hear the tunes.
as for live ive seen a fair few, and usually at BIG events they really add to the atmos. i.e when skibba walks on 'WOOF WOOF WOOF Wheres mah dogs at?!' .....everyone goes nuts. definately adds to it. also he has some slower sing along ryhmes, flavour for raver i think? not quite sure as i only went to a few slammins...
hardcore:
at first i really hated the mcs in hardcore because i was getting into the music and i hated it. this was because i'd come from trance and had never experienced mcs before. i went to a few big events and started to give them a chance. now that ive been to a lot of events there are mcs i like....and mcs i dont
whizzkid and storm are definately the top of the pile. they both have multiple sing along lyrics and crowd pleasers. which are great when you're there because it sort of unifies the whole place, as cheesy as it sounds ;)
at first i didnt like oddysey.....but after seeing him a couple times live hes won me over. his voice goes hand in hand with the energy that sharkey and kev give to the crowd. sharkey is the same, whenever he steps up to the mic its great because he can mc to good effect with freeform. storm or whizzkid would sound e with freeform, but they're great with the happy stuff
wotsee is just total e...along with smiley whos utter e, and who else.....rude? crap as well..raver/quaver? no.
so you've got so much choice in hardcore theres going to be ones you like and ones you dont
in conclusion. mc's have thier place, they just need to know where it is. |

Has NOTHING to do with trance.
i only meant it from a standpoint of being at a club.
ANY electronic music I, PERSONALLY, would rather just focus on the music....
They're def well suited for hip-hop

the speech that the mc gives combines with adagio for strings is really great
but other then that they should shut the fuk up
i remember listening to ferry's right of way album release party in amsterdam a few years ago and the mc was talkin like every 2 min
it was so annoying i dont know how ferry put up with it |

| The mc who does the mc job during Stunned Guys @ hardcore psychopats are quiet amazing :) Also the mc who does the job during dana @ In qontrol are good too. But the mc who does the hardcore room during the Decibel outdoor party does suck big time |

| I don't know if it's considered a MC, but Digweed going "This is Kiss 100 with [name of DJ]" or whatever, and they insert their "Kiss..." or "Essential Mixxxx..." samples it usually sounds cool :p |

With drum and bass I find the majority of the time the MC's mess up sets, but if they get it right its wicked.
These days though i start gettin annoyed wen there isnt an MC with dnb i think it needs it to stop it from being boring. |
