I'm pleased Belinda won, if only because I want to see how far she is able to take her career based on being the daughter of a business tycoon.
I've heard little of her political skills, otherwise. |

I have to admit, I thought there would be a lot of backlash but she did stuck to her guns.

probably because she has none, she won by name alone.... how can you be pleased with that? Shes damn lucky, if she lost that would have seriously hampered her career. Too bad because she deserved to lose. |

Funny I wonder what agenda Belinda is pushing?
Her father, Frank Stronach, is anit-gay rights and anti-abortion.
When my father was parachuted into that riding in the late 90's, Frank was going to fund his campaign. However when told that my dad was a believer of following his constutient's wishes on those subjects (pro-choice, gay rights as mariage hadn't come up yet) Frank pulled his funding and my dad exited the election. They dropped some Magna flunkie in his stead.
I wonder how far Belinda falls from the tree? |

that's unfair to say...if she lost, you'd say that the voters punished her, she got what she deserved, etc...but now that she's won, it's not about voter saavy at all...it's because of her name alone, lol.
say what you will...she's handled herself well...and proven all of her detractors wrong by easily keeping her seat (a few people around here can now eat their words!) |

Glad to see only a slim minority...Harper will need at least one other party on board to do pretty much anything. I think this is a good result, for us non-CPC supporters, as we'll get to see how the CPC chooses to govern, without them being able to radically overhaul anything at all.
I'm *very* pleased to see that Liberals Michael Igantieff and my own MP, Bill Graham, easily won their seats as well. Graham had more than double the 2nd place CPC candidate and more than 52% of the vote!
Also quite pleased to see that CPC candidate Rondo Thomas (gay marriage is "a battle between righteousness and immorality") lost his riding by a wide margin. Thanks for coming out Rondo (pardon the pun) :p
Noteworthy:
- despite various polls recently suggesting that the gap between the Libs and CPC in the popular vote was anywhere between 10-15%, it ended up being only 6% in the end.
- Belinda easily retained her seat...so much for voter backlash that some people here predicted ;)
- Green party got 4.5% of the popular vote, up only 0.2% and 100k votes over 2004. Not the progress they were seeking, I'm sure.
- high profile CPC candidate Peter Kent was a non-factor...although not expected to beat incumbent Liberal Carolyn Bennett, I think he and the CPC expected a better result.
- deputy PM Anne McLellan lost her seat.
- Olivia Chow won...I heard her victory speech...she IS nuts.
now we watch and wait...here's hoping that this session of Parliament is more productive and has more party co-operation than the last one...and that the Liberals retool and boot out Harper the next time around ;) |

Never an Alliance/Reform supporter, always a PC supporter. Was planning on giving Harper my support but I couldn't do it. Until there is some "progessive" in the conservative party again - I just can't do it.
So don't be sad. |
