Softsynths can sound great if combined with a good pre/mixer in my case I use a 2408/24i/o with a d/a converter going out of my pc to a mackie 32/8 with an Avalon 747 on my main insterts... thats 32 channels of only softsynths....with some eq'ing and Avalon 747... its a whole new ballgame...

I thought VA synths were just basically software in a hardware shell.
I guess real analog synths do sound warmer and richer compared to software, but not VA synths. Am I wrong?

I think you can just as easily make a hardware synth sound bad as you can make a software synth sound bad. I believe 'sound/effect processing' is just as important as having a straight hardware sound plugged in to your comp.

Don't know if the price would be the only let down for switching to hardware (if you would even have to, or call it a 'choice'). As Pjotr said, A LOT of softsynths don't come cheap. Reaktor is freely obatinable of course since it's fully digital - though that's a whole different story... In fact, I strongly believe a whole lot of software synths are marketed in a wrong way be making these prices so damn high; to me it would just be screaming for piracy (which is of course piece of cake with digital media).

As I have already mentioned, I think you also need to keep in mind: the space you will be needing if you'd replace every softsynth with a hardware synth, the accessibility that will be different, the ease of use etc etc. It doesn't all come down to just the price only - except in case of RIDICULOUSLY expensive synths such as the Virus TI of course - there the bottleneck is EASILY visible lol...

In my case (yes, this is personal), hardware synths would come at a wrong time now, for most abovementioned reasons. This is why I stick to softsynths and try to make the best out of them.

though you have to admit (ok, I have to admit :D)

that sitting in a room stuffed with flickering lights does work wonders for creative flow

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

Though cabling is a bitch, along wih 15 different types of interface and sysex, and ground hum if you are unlucky/unwise, but boy there is something to be said for a wall of toys...

If you're starting then you can get very far with just a comp and some software, but for me 9 times out of 10 I find myself reaching for the hardware.

As for "Good luck affording it". If you can't invest in what you are doing then maybe you are in the wrong game.

Think of a studio as a racing car. They run from a go-kart right up to a multi-million dollar F1 car. You can have lots of fun in all of them..

What you need (don't confuse want with need!) and how much you spend depends on many factors. Having massive studio well stocked wih lots of toys counts for nothing against the creative musician (yes, I said musician!) armed with a relatively cheap computer and handful of relatively inexpensive pograms.

Though a well stocked studio in the hands of someone who knows how to handle it will produce sounds that will make you cry and wonder How the ()*&(*7 did they do that?!

There's a place for both, but let's not get things out of perspective.

Everybody has his personal thing that gets his ideas flowing :)

There's something more motivating, looking at something that's juicy and sexy, touching the knobs softly, turning it around and around, licking your lips as you...uh....uhem. Excuse me.

I find working hard for something super expenisve like a virus, with all those sexy knobs, more motivating to work with.

But it's clear that both work, the proof is there in today's songs. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

I love softsynths.

They are the future for sure in my opinion, coupled with maybe a hardware controller, there isn't nothing you can't do with them.

Pay your respect to the 3xOsc!

Well I'm using softsynths as the el cheapo entry level method of getting an idea of what im doing.

At this stage i would be stupid to think that going and buying the virus TI is gonna make me that myuch better at what im doing.

But if I had heaps of cash I would buy hardware in a second, there would be nothing sexier than having a room filled with racks.........................
