the biggest factor for me is how comfortable it is.. the changes to seating/space alone could move me to a yes, just not familiar with what you mean in terms of the spacing.. mini-bed do you mean the angled seats that fold down completely?? that i would pay more for if it was a long flight.. |
For me that is KEY - i always wish those damn seats could recline further. 'Cause if you can get most people to sleep on the plane with a comfy chair, you won't need all the other bells and whistles to entertain them.
On the other hand, the longest flight I've been on was only 7 hours to Portugal so... wouldn't know what a 10+ hr flight is like. |

Thanks for all your help everyone ... I know this is still in the very rough stages right now. As long as there is some intrest, it might work. I just have to come up with some solid specs and foundation.
Yes distance will be a major concern with the pricing and pls remember, this new class would only be a minority of the plane. Most people wouldn't take this class. It would be a progression project, it would start off with only 20 seats and if the demand is there, it will be increased. It's little extra for those who are willing to pay a little more.
You guys been really helpful and now it's time to hit the books and drawing board!
Support those who support you ... always keep that in your books. |

More leg room would be nice but if that's gonna cost me 40% more, no thanks. |
Leg room is EVERYTHING to me.
Took a charter to Paris once, and PROMISED myself i'd NEVER charter again |

smart... take a "what do we have to lose" approach, and it will quickly become a mistake NOT to go with your plan... |

Probably not.
People will always pay for the cheapest flight no matter what.
How many people don't look for seat sales? (Case closed.) |

| i voted no because that is a very big increase. 40-50% is a lot and the things that you are proposing to offer are too much. offer less additives. techincally what a person needs is a power plug, more leg room, a screen in the seat in front and internet connection. all the other stuff is too much and not needed. |

We had a very long flight going to and coming back from Paris due to turbulence.
On the way there we had really nice seats and a sufficient amount of leg room. This was in Economy on US Airways. It was overnight so we slept a lot.
On the way back the flight was nearly 10 hrs from Paris CDG to philadelphia, it was very cramped and there were these metal things attached to the front seats. I have a really bad knee and it's imperative that my leg extends straight when I sit or else it gets so swollen! Man was that unpleasant.
My point is the inconsistency between the flight there and back, which is due to the model of the plane. Depending on the airline, most have strict regulations for international flights enduring 6+ hours in terms of comfort. Also newer models of american airline, us airways, and westjest have made it their mandate to construct larger seats and provide more leg room. This was a result of people's blood circulation being cut off in their legs and subsequently suffering from massive swelling; in the case of overweight people they can die.
Getting to your point John, I think that these amenities can be worthwhile at a business class level, and al ready are at an additional 50% of the cost. However, I would encourage you to exploit your keypoint on guaranteed comfort seating in the range of 15%-35% more.
A great example of this slight augmentation is researching Eurostar-Italy. We took three different types of trains in Italy:
-IC(Inter-City)-very bad, box car seating that is really uncomfortable
-Eurostar 2nd class, different train that is fairly comfortable with sufficient luggage area @ apr. 10-25% more than IC. Far better.
-Eurostar 1st class. Wow. Huge seats, tons of leg room, free newspapers, trolly with free limited snacks and all sorts of beverages, big luggage cabins, big bathrooms. For 5% to %10 more than Eurostar 2nd class. I swear if I lived in Italy I would always travel 1st class at such little extra cost.
I would also look at the ratio of personal travellers vs business travellers, and what their opinions are of different airlines and flights.
Air Canada sucks the big one BTW. They were government owned and were a monopoly for a while, and basically have neglected upgrading seating, amenities, etc. They definitely don't set a proper airline example.
Good luck,

| Have you checked out British Airway's World Traveller Plus product? Kinda sounds like what you're suggesting for Air Canada...I'm not an expert though... |
