WARNING! THIS THREAD CONTAINS VIEWS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT COINCIDE WITH YOUR OWN! PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY ONE ANOTHER FOR THEIR BELIEFS! TOLERANCE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*gasp, its another one of these threads. Sorry.

Anyhoo. I gave the first Tarot reading of my life today, and the reading I interpreted from the cards was different from the books . I just looked at the cards and thought about them a little bit, and the stuff I said just seemed come from nowhere. Granted, he is my best friend, so I can make far more accurate assumptions about probabilities reguarding his future.

I also dabble in Palmistry, and Astrology and am fascinated by astral projection and dream control (Or Dreamscaping if you will :D). I am also supposed to be Catholic. I believe in God, but I think of this "God" a tad differently than most. I believe that God is energy, and I also believe that free will is an illusion. I believe free will is an illusion because we as humans are direct results of our environment due to our conditioned thinking. If hypothesis makes up opinion, and opinion makes up reason, and reason makes up principle and understanding, then we have no choice in this life if our environment directly affects every action we "choose". I believe in spiritual connectedness, and that we are all a part of a whole.

The problem I seem to be having is that Christianity in general forbids the occult. To me this seems to be a logical paradox.

Any faith based religion reuires you to believe in something intangable or metaphysical.

If Christianity is based off faith, why should it have the authority to determine which faith is correct? If you believe that the lines on your hands have meaning, or that the stars in the sky have an infleuence on your life, no matter how vague, you are in defiance of "The Lord" and refuse his love and therefore should burn in Hell for all eternity. This does not make sense to me. If you can find beauty and truth in anything, this should be an appreciation of 'his work'. Also, it takes a certain degree of believing in something which you cannot grasp to delve into either side of the spectrum. Whether you are a hardcore born again Christian, or a Hindu Yogi or Sadist or Wiccan or whatever you are, its like fumbling around in a cave that provides light only when you have the capacity to realize. And it all comes from experiencing the peaks and valleys of life.

Christianity forbids other methods of understanding things through unconventional methods that have actually been around longer than Christianity itself. "This is the right way, and if you don't go along with it, then FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!" If Any religion can place strings on what you can and cannot believe in, does that not in fact defeat the purpose of believing in a religion?

Do you believe that bread and wine can cleanse your soul?
Do you believe that acting in a reasonable and justified manner is correct?

Or do you KNOW it beyond all doubt?

Why do we believe in something? We believe in it because it makes sense. I believe that you can somewhat define a person very loosely on their Sign in conjunction with their palms. I may or may not delve into Tarot, but I know I have seen one persons future in dreams I have had on three separate occasions, and they were told about it weeks in advance before the event happened. I also know that when I ask myself questions before I sleep, I receive answers, or at least vague assumptions. I cannot forsee anyones future, but I can tell them a little bit about themselves provided I can see their palms and I know when their birthday is.

Intuition or instinct or whatever you want to call it is help from 'above'. Any ability to help people or at the very least entertain them is a good thing right?

Short version is this

People who engage in Christianity and believe that the occult if forbidden and wrong are trapped in a logical paradox. They place their beliefs or opionated 'truths' in a grander feeling of belonging and try to impose their wills on others. Getting information from the occult sciences is no different from trying to look for a greater truth offerd by "our savior" It seems wrong that any way of trying to gain a greater understanding could be forbidden

Is it really cheating yourself if it gives you a greater understanding of yourself and surroundings and therefore five you a desire to achieve greater things for yourself and others? Sometimes its pleasant to have hope :D

So what is the truth?
bloated_cow
Is the truth something you believe, or something you know?

Can the truth be different for different people?

SO I got done banging my girlfriend (really I swear this is relavent)

And basically...

This sort of conversation does not make good post-sexual encounter chat.

We got in a big tussle of creationism vs evolution... so that being said.

You are cheating yourself intellectually if you put your faith in false hope.

Faith is good and all...

...But I can't find myself taking credibility in books written by people annointed with some CHRONIC oil (oh yea, cannibus oil) or believing that cards based on antiquated legends.

I guess I'm just a dick. I mean know offence, believe what you want to believe if it makes you happy... but don't ignore solid fact and truth and then CLAIM it's attacking your belief system...

...wait did I go on a tangent.

sorry.

The truth is what you want it to be!

What you believe that is truth, is truth for you. Either that or you don't fully believe it :)

The "true" truth nobody knows.

i saw christianity, and i stopped reading it there. if i was to be in any religion, it'd be christianity, and ive had theology courses, and i can debate for the side of christianity, but it's all just one big mess i dont want to be a part of. the debate itself. it just gets nasty.
