good meeting u.. And I told Dani that Sasha played a LOT of breaks, she is like, NO, its just a different style.. I was very surprised Sasha following Oakey and dropping breaks.. |
I've been listening to Sasha since the early 90's when he and John played regularly in Florida (Gainesville and Orlando) and then later I lived in the UK from 97-99 and have been in NYC ever since. So just from looking back through his sound over the years, saying Sasha is following Oakey is a bit silly. Sasha has thrown in breaks often in the past, anyone who went to Twilo during 98/99/2000 would catch plenty of breaks (UK breaks) from around 6/7am onwards as the drunkards went home, slightly easing up the crowd on the floor. Sasha and John used that time to really stretch out and experiment with music. Music such as Hybrid's mixes of Alanis Morisette, Hybrid's Finished Symphony, songs off of UK breaks label Marine Parade, Morgan King's I am Free as well as Sasha's production with Andy Page - Rabbitweed, are still amazing and beautiful pieces of music that incorporated breaks with progressive.
In addition, while Sasha was still (1997-1999) part of Tyrant with Lee Burridge and Craig Richards, they had residencies in London (The End) and Nottingham (The Bomb). Part of the music programming for the Tyrant nights was to bring in uk breaks dj sets into the sideroom (the genre was just in its infancy), where djs such as Adam Freeland and DJ Dan would regularly command those rooms the whole night. In addition, he played this type of music at numerous one-off events (Nottinghill Carnival) and some unannounced sets at Lee and Craig's weekly uk breaks party on Sundays at the Atlantis Bar in London.
As for last night, I thought it rocked. The first 2/3rds of his set were amazing, I think he really combined the sounds that he and John usually tag off of each other to get to. Dark and driving but also very beautiful. I liked UK breaks in the past but the sound kind of lost its way for a few years and if it comes back now in a more electro-tinged sound like last night then I am still digging it. End of the set was also a lot of fun.
To each their own, but I do think that being denied/granted access to the upper floors sadly but probably influenced your ability to enjoy yourself and the music. But then I am sure there will also be people telling me they were upstairs the whole time and they didnt enjoy it. In any case, I personally am looking forward to the next 6 months.

I had a bracelet and could go up to the other floors. That didn't help. I mean, maybe I should have just stayed there, but hanging out in VIP isn't really what the party's about for me. I just wasn't into his set. And it's not like I don't know what he's been playing.
Also, I'm don't get why people are surprised with the breaks. As someone said earlier, he plays a lot of breaks when he plays with Zabiela. Also, one of his most recent recorded sets was from Annie Nightingale's Radio One show. You'd think if he didn't play breaks, he probably wouldn't have gotten that invite. |

I didn't manage to make it to when sasha came on.. or maybe I just didn't realize it. I over drank for the first time in 3 years.. got sloppy and had to be escorted out. So.. all and all I basically died. I managed to meet up with Ryan before I basically died ;) lets just say that I made a few people run out of a resturant that my car was parked outside infront of. =( rough night.. I wasn't feeling the music on the main floor before I blacked out ..
Sorry Daniela! :( |
