I've been listening to Sasha since the early 90's when he and John played regularly in Florida (Gainesville and Orlando) and then later I lived in the UK from 97-99 and have been in NYC ever since. So just from looking back through his sound over the years, saying Sasha is following Oakey is a bit silly. Sasha has thrown in breaks often in the past, anyone who went to Twilo during 98/99/2000 would catch plenty of breaks (UK breaks) from around 6/7am onwards as the drunkards went home, slightly easing up the crowd on the floor. Sasha and John used that time to really stretch out and experiment with music. Music such as Hybrid's mixes of Alanis Morisette, Hybrid's Finished Symphony, songs off of UK breaks label Marine Parade, Morgan King's I am Free as well as Sasha's production with Andy Page - Rabbitweed, are still amazing and beautiful pieces of music that incorporated breaks with progressive.

In addition, while Sasha was still (1997-1999) part of Tyrant with Lee Burridge and Craig Richards, they had residencies in London (The End) and Nottingham (The Bomb). Part of the music programming for the Tyrant nights was to bring in uk breaks dj sets into the sideroom (the genre was just in its infancy), where djs such as Adam Freeland and DJ Dan would regularly command those rooms the whole night. In addition, he played this type of music at numerous one-off events (Nottinghill Carnival) and some unannounced sets at Lee and Craig's weekly uk breaks party on Sundays at the Atlantis Bar in London.

As for last night, I thought it rocked. The first 2/3rds of his set were amazing, I think he really combined the sounds that he and John usually tag off of each other to get to. Dark and driving but also very beautiful. I liked UK breaks in the past but the sound kind of lost its way for a few years and if it comes back now in a more electro-tinged sound like last night then I am still digging it. End of the set was also a lot of fun.

To each their own, but I do think that being denied/granted access to the upper floors sadly but probably influenced your ability to enjoy yourself and the music. But then I am sure there will also be people telling me they were upstairs the whole time and they didnt enjoy it. In any case, I personally am looking forward to the next 6 months.

:)

Just curious what clubs in FL did you go to? I used to live near orlando and hear sasha quite often. I dont seem to remember him or digweed playing to much electro then. I have seen sasha at zen parties in FL the first few ultras on miami beach, at firestone, at Simons etc.

we just never crossed paths! i was there from 1:30 till 7:15! I agree that sashas set lacked the magic of previous performances, but was still pretty decent. i also agree that the lighting was REALLY bad too - crobar needs to invest some $$ in that department. lots of hairgelly guidos too... anyone who stayed till the end of the set got to hear m83 - teen angst! :D which was very very amazing!

btw, I thought the opening set was one of the most boring in all of history...

I agree I dont know why but Astro and Glyde were dropping peak time bomb breaks such as PMT - Gyromancer (Elite Force Remix) in an opening set...maybe they should get a tutorial on opening sets from luke fair or jimmy van m :whip: :whip: :whip:

i think sasha played a decent set. i've certainly heard way better even in his new style but i think overall it had some great moments and was done craftfully. it was a little jumbled up, not the best flowing set but that's fine. the crowd was horrid, the dj booth moving to the side instead of teh front of the room really put me off. the crowd really put me off 10X more. the meatballs with their massproduced stick-it-up-from side-front-back roundshaped hairdos etc were repugnant. really awful crowd... should have seen the freaks left over at 7 am... not one person in that club seemed less than sketchy!

also in agreement with previous posts crobar's lighting is such crap. looks liek a freaking high school play production.... gross.

that big room (when not pointing to a dj booth on the side) really is cool and superclub looking... but the lighting really ruins it all. the small led's were the only half cool thing and everyting else looked like it was lighting for a cheesy play.

and just one more complaint before i retire to sleep.... the things that i liked about crobar - staff being chilled out towards customers, the ease of getting into the club very quickly for all the past sasha events (as well as a relatively nonsketchy crowd) was all quite the opposite :( ...

security was annoying and uptight and the lines outside were chaotic with no organization. seems like a major deterioration since the last time i was there in 05!

I liked the opening, but I'd agree, it wasn't really an opening.

They also played Joachim Garraud - Rock the Choice.

Is it any wonder why I ended up dancing by myself or with other friends? For some reason random guys who groped me didn’t believe he was my bf when I pointed to him humping other people’s legs. :p

Anyway, I concur the party felt like it was sponsored by Dep. All that hair gel must kill brain cells. When we arrived around midnight Astro & Glyde were banging it out. I wondered how Sasha would pick up from where they left off since they didn't leave much room for him to build up. Early on it wasn't that crowded, and the Hotti crew hadn't invaded yet. The majority of people were dancing and having a good time. It almost reminded me of Arc b/c of the kids in track jackets and baseball caps, who were there to dance instead of violate. There was definitely a fun, easy going feel.

Then after an hour into Sasha's set things definitely took a downturn. The club was packed, but thankfully my friend hooked us up with bracelets for the mezz. It made a huge difference to be able to escape the mess on the main floor. I spent most of the night running around meeting up with friends to make something of the evening. I’ve seen Sasha probably ~ 25 times from Twilo to Dance Valley, and his set definitely left a lot for longing. As Sal mentioned he looked sick, not at all like this from the Involver release party at Canal Room. Sasha needs to go back to his roots and just have fun again. It seems like he’s trying to be too innovative and incorporate lots of different genres, which without any cohesiveness just sounds like the mess Friday was.

And yes, the lighting did suck, but it usually does in NYC clubs. I don’t think any of them use lasers on a regular basis. It’s something they haven’t really cared to invest in. Instead, they’re building a tunnel underneath the stage at Crobar to connect 27th St. to the VIP room…

Actually, that room isn't going to be part of Crobar anymore. From my understanding of the conversation, it's going to be a completely different club that's going to be cut off from the main floor. Kind of like what they did with Spirit from when it used to be all 3 or 4 floors when it was openend back in early 2004.

On the plus side, we were told that the stage will be going back when they're done with the tunnel. Right now it looks like they could do half pipe competitions in there.

Late post, but I'm sick and tired of having to wait on line at NY events for no freakin reason...and yes I was 18 once in my life, but making it 18+ to events that are already going to guarantee massive crowds is absurd...

Overall, the set was decent, the place was packed, and the temporary setup sucked ass......i still had a good time with friends, thats all that matters in the end.

Tracks of the night:

16 Bit Lolitas - Sadina
Depeche Mode - Precious (Sasha mix)
Pryda - Aftermath (unknown remix)
