Cleaning your records...

I have been trying to think of ideas for a record cleaning device. I am doing this for an engineering class. I stated this in another thread started by Basilf1. I have an idea for a non-electric record cleaning device.
I was just wondering, what are the problems that you encounter while cleaning your records and if the device was cheap enough would you buy it? I know there are electric devices for thousands of dollars and you go to your local record cleaning store (yeah right..) but what are your thoughts?
Thanks,

What is 'non-electic' ? Do you mean non-electric?
So you mean 'human-powered'.. It has to have a good brush, mine always leaves tons of dust on the record which is hard to take off. And you need to apply anti-static fluid on the record surface, to keep you records from getting very dusty. |

non-electric, yes I'm sorry, i typed that a little to quick...
Yeah, basically, because i did my research and found electric ones for thousands so... whos gunna buy them? besides major stores...
I was just wondering what some problems were, I know what to do to clean records I just want to know what some problems were that happens to a lot of people... |

i remember seeing some instructions on how you can construct your own record cleaner, w/some wood, and motor/platter from a turntable, and a vacuum cleaner.
lemme see if i can find it... |

one thing that's noteworthy...
in the teres audio link, they specifically advise against using foto-flo, water or alcohol that you can purchase at the supermarket/drugstore.
here in djforums they use foto-flo:

i used the djforums guide to whip up my own batch of record cleaning fluid. i picked up the water and alcohol from a local drugstore, and the foto-flo from a camera shop.
so far (6-8 months of use) i really like it. my records are spic and span, and they pretty much stay static free too.
plus, i made a gallon of cleaning fluid for less than 15 dollars. the rediculously low cost allows me to as anal retentive as i want to be about keeping my vinyl clean.
so far, i have not noticed anything funny w/the records.
going the route outlined in the first link will easily cost you more than a $100 to make a gallon of cleaning fluid...
hhhhmmmmm... 15dollars, or $100
choice was easy for me. |

Hey, I know, I have seen this before... but would you make it? Would you make it for a $100? Would you use it? Do think it works the best? |

| Find a way to mechanize the process to clean records reliably using Gruv Glide. I'd definitely give it a shot. |

considering my currect financial situation, i wouldn't even waste my time thinking about mixing my own batch of fluid using the ingredients they insist on. like i said before, for me, the photo flo + distilled water + alcohol that i picked up at the drugstore works great for me, just as good as the commercial cleaners.
i guess in the end, spending a 100+ making your own fluid will still be cheaper than buying commercial stuff.
waxhead, i don't think that's gonna work. the instructions that come w/gruvglide specifically tell you NOT to spray the product directly on the record. unless you want you dunk the pad in the fluid... but that's a huge waste. |

this seems like a good thread to mention that nem says he uses zippo lighter fluid with good results.. i've been thinking about trying that method.
care to elaborate nem? |

lol imagine if it was still flammable when dry on your vinyl. Spinning out and all of a sudden... vvvvoooooommm!!! Your vinyls on fire!
Interesting though.. I wonder how long i'd want someone to test a cleaning method though before i'd use it myself. A year? 5 years?

Come on guys, let’s be serious… Besides using chemicals and other various fluids, what about the mechanical process…? What can make that better? Do you encounter problems with wiping your records? Is there something that would make your life easier when it comes to cleaning your records?
p.s.
Sr126 – so you would ditch your chemical combo for gruv glide to clean your records?
Thanks for the posts... ;) |
