American movies suck (pg. 3)

I understand the business of hollywood, but earlier, there was a thread bashing Bollywood (and Indian Films as a whole) on a couple of bases. Either people were criticizing the cultural differences (music, apperance, character norms) which is ridiculous or they were criticizing it's formulaic approach.

American film business has been largely successfuly due to a similar approach, and I think Indian filma makers see that and try to apply it's emulation to their own culture. But bashing it because most of the films suck is dumb. Good film making knows no nationality, and with a little effort, you can find the films that give a nation a reputation for putting out good work. If you dig through the tried and tired framework that many Indian films use, you can get to some real good stuff, just like if you dig through every Fantastic Four, you'll find a Citizen Kane.

Why would anyone demand anything different?

If there weren't Doom movies then we wouldn't think Citizen Kane movies were exceptional

A good movie can stand up on it's own without comparrison. I think a glut of poor movies makes average movies look exceptional.

The opinion idea almost always holds up though.

Tribu, don't think you are original or alone for thinking american movies suck. There are plenty of people out there who are fixated on the loads of crap that are released each year in Hollywood. However, if you actually look at the number of quality releases from the U.S. over the years, no country can come even close. Here's a refresher since you apparantly have the same condition as Guy Pearce in Memento.

2000's
Hotel Rawanda
The Pianist
Requiem for a Dream
Crash
American History X
The Incredibles
Gladiator
Cinderella Man
Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Now, as far as quality in not just numbers, but different genres, foriegn films, perhaps aside from English films, don't hold a candle to American comedies. This is not saying American comedies are so great, just foriegn ones are a) not common, b) terrible. Second, animation movies. In much the same way that the english are really the only competition when it comes to comedies, the japanese are the only true competition with american animation films when it comes to animated films. As for good old fashioned blockbuster popcorn flicks, no country has anything on the U.S. Now you can be a pretentious ahole and say that these are shallow films that aren't even worth discussing, but your ego would be blinding you from the fact that popcorn flicks are as important to the cinema as a movie like City of God or Hotel Rawanda. Looking forward to your reply.
