Bought mine September of 2002. Athlon XP 1900+ 1.6ghz.

Nice and old, but still does the trick.

Started off with a Pentium III 450.

Migrated to an Athlon 800.

Then an Athlon Thunderbird-core 1400.

Now I'm using an Athlon64 3200+.

Also, I don't know what you mean about the MacBooks being slower than G4 Powerbooks... Side by side with otherwise identical specs, the MacBook beats the hell out of the PBs, even when running non-universal software being emulated in realtime under Rosetta in OS X 10.4.4. They're even faster than the G5 iMacs. We get to play with them all day at work.

have a P4 1.7ghz for about 4 years now. still working great

is yours a socket 754 or a 939?

i use the same one currently (939)... board is though which hurts clocking... it will go from 1.8 to a bit over 2.0

also use a athlon 1700+ running gentoo on another computer here

i've been all amd since about 1995

I have an AMD Sempron (yes, it's low end) right now. No complaints :D

I WAS a huge Intel fan. Had a P2/P3/P4.

Now, AMD. I just got an Opteron 165 for $320. Never been happeir in my life, runs faster then my old P4 2.2 at 1.8, and I'm going to OC on air to 2.6 later.

AMD FTW!

Acutally, if anyone is in the market for CPU upgrades, look at the Opterons or the X2 Athlons.

Wow I didn't expect Intel would have this much votes ... they've been doing pretty badly recently. Hence why they had to team up with APple to make the Dual Core CPU for the ProBooks

Less than two years after the introduction of the world’s first dual-core x86 processors, Intel Corp. will release its quad-core microprocessor for servers. The new chips will feature the new micro-architecture which is expected to be described at Intel’s developer forum (IDF) this spring.

Intel on Friday said it would release its chip code-named Clovertown in early 2007 and will start revenue shipments as early as late this year. It is unclear whether Clovertown chips will consist of a single die, or will utilize a number of separate cores mounted on a single piece of substrate, but it is known that the chip will be made using 65nm fabrication process.

“We are well along in the validation process of this new design and it has been showing such robust performance we decided that it was to let people see it,” said Justin Rattner, Intel’s chief executive officer.

Mr. Rattner showcased the first working samples of Clovertown product in a server designed for two physical processors. The new server platform will have two sockets, but will be able to demonstrate performance levels similar to today’s high-end 8-way machines while also consuming less power.

Intel’s chief technology officer also said that while increasing the number of execution cores within processors is a priority for the chip giant these days, the company will also attempt to teach software designers how to take advantage of multi-core processors.

Mr. Rattner also predicted that in a decade microprocessors will feature tens or hundreds of execution engines.
