The state of techno

I made the transition about a year and a half go from trance to mainly techno as my preferred sound. I've found some old stuff (mainly from Internet radio and that "Essential Mix" thread that was posted a while ago on here).

Anyways...one thing I've noticed in the last 4-5 months is that Techno is kinda reverting back to an electronic sound. One example of this is the re-birth of the electronic drum machine. Recently have heard stuff from like this from Cox, Bailey, and Clarke. Frankly I love it, the rebirth of a hybrid mix of new techno with a mid 90's sound. I'm really looking to 2006, as even Toronto has seen alot more techno in the last 8 months than it has in the previous 2-3 years.

Anyone else notice a change for the better in techno lately?

You're right. I'm not too sure about the whole reverting back to the more electronic sound since I'm not really a true hardcore Technohead, but I definetly agree with you about the increase in popularity. When I mean popularity, I mean it more in the sense that the clubs are giving it the time (like what you said, sort of) as opposed to it getting popular with the mainstream which it's pretty far from.

What I love about Techno from the clubbing point of view is that I see it being the genre that trance, house, hardcore, jungle... whatever you wanna call it, everyone can seem to agree on it. If the Guv or the Docks had a techno only event with not even the genres biggest names, say Cave, Nastic, Christian Smith, Varela.... it would be rammed.

personally i dont like the direction in which its going, its no more sounding like the bang bang stuff i like.

all the techno dj's are really getting minimal and electro which sucks. techno should remain hard and banging.

Alot of the big names are playing electro influenced right now, but there are still quite a few playing straight out balls to the wall tech.(Dj Murphy comes to mind right away)I believe the reason for this is that electro is the new trance(meaning the next genre to be mainstream and by mainstream i mean the most commercially viable genre of edm).Honestly there are not many hardcore tech heads compared to years past.I consider myself pretty hardcore, but the minimalist stuff really turns me off.A few minimalist tracks in a set is great, but a whole set makes me want to hang myself.(Misstress Barbara please retire).Artists like Liebing and what not want to make the most $$$ while they can so it is almost normal for them to try and find a sound that appeals to the broadest audience possible.
That being said....

Preach FTW...Bal en Blanc 06...the day my ankles get broken by beefy beat sammiches :tongue3

kthxby yojipiggybackbbq:tongue3

Techno is a genre that is just going to keep re-inventing itself. That is the beauty of it. Right now minimal is huge....Most DJs are going "softer" and the harder pounding beats are losing the momentum that they have had for the last five years. Will it stay this way though? Probably not.

Techno DJs now are increasingly incorporating records and sounds crossing all genres into any given set. Carl's Guv 9 year set was about 1/3 acid house, electro and tech-house. Then you have DJs that are playing sets that are almost all of this sound that used to play much harder, such as Adam Beyer and Misstress Barbara.

As a DJ I just lost interest in the techno being produced, and when I start feeling like 80% of what is being produced is predictable and boring...that's when I started looking in other sections of the record store.

Re. minimal, specifically - minimal, despite its name, can actually be quite complex and groovy. Also it works really well with other genres of music, like house and electro. the opportunities for layering sounds are infinite.

i agree that minimal can be groovy, but listening to a 4 hour set of it in a club is like watching that Groundhog day movie.I used to be a big fan of Hawtin, now i get bored after 5 minutes of one of his sets.
Minimal is probably the best filler material to lead to the beefy part of sets.Just minimal is just stupid.Thats just my opinion though. As far as electro goes i really like most of it.Dj's like Ellen Alien blow me away.Like every genre there are a few i really do not like...chalk it up to taste i suppose.Cirez D and alot of Mousevilles releases are really carving a niche in clubbers tastes right now IMO.

Its all about personal taste....When Mauro extended his 3 hour set to 6 hours, 2 weeks ago here in mtl...there were tons of minimal influences...but he kept it going with some techno shades in there...was truly amazing.

Edit:: not a minimal fan really but I like what sven is doing with it now.

i'm starting to get into techno because of minimal based on the fact that i find it to be quite groovy and complex. i've always liked tech house but i hate hard pounding techno (unless it's acid techno, and i can't explain why)...so i'm pleased to see i'm finding stuff in the genre that i like. anyways, i don't really know much about it so i'm just babbling, really!

as for saying it's boring, it's the same arguement that people had about prog back in the day. to each their own.

Agreed...it's just most important to appreciate the audience and the venue, regardless of genre. but as part of that audience, it helps to keep an open mind, and go out without set expectations of what will or what won't make you enjoy a set.

One thing that I will state, is that if you define techno by one particular sound (hard, minimal, whatever) - then you don't understand much about the genre! as I said, it is a genre that can be characterized by the huge range of music that falls into it!

Groundhog day is a classic! You don't know what you're talking about :p
