I think his old CDs like Tranceport, New York(possibly one of the best CDs ever), Resident, Oslo are absolutely fabulous!! |
I NEVER understood what's so great about 'Tranceport'.
It has extremely boring tracks like "Time" and "Gus Gus - Purple" and "Ascension" and that I never liked.
I've heard the NY compilation isn't too danceable either.
For me, an upbeat mix by Tiesto or Ferry or Kimball Collins is much better. |

| Well...IMO...i think hes been losin his touch for awhile...everyones talked about how great his GU: New York & GU: Oslo CDs were but now u dont hear that...i bought his perfecto CD a yr or two ago and was pleasently surprized...i didnt see the big hype he was...i still dont...i bought the swordfish CD and i dont think i have played it recently...last time was probably 4months ago...lol...my point is...when u have such a BIG name like his...u can kinda sorta kick back and just ride out the wave u made...which hes doin...i predict that when his name goes out he'll start tryin again but might be too late...could be too late now to start anyway... |

| You have to feel New York. You can't just expect it to jump and grab you!! Listen to it a few times then you will appreciate its goodness!! It's basically the same with all GUs. Listen to them a few times and never turn back!! |

and sorry but I still like Oakey cuz he was the first DJ that really got me hooked into trance (from a DJ perspective ofcourse).
True that the past year from him has been crap...but wouldn't go as far as two years like most of you have said.
Will alwayz give him respect due to the influence he had -- musically -- on moi. |
hehe, Oakie was a big influence on me too... i still like him alot, and will always give him respect as well... good to see another oakie fan SYNthSRI!! |

Thats exactly the same with me. :o
His older stuff is definately gold (for me)
Even though some stuff he plays now is commercial, i still like the album Perfecto present another world. It has a definate climax that you can feel.
May be hes getting old i dunno
Ya i liked the GU New York, it is quite a typical oakey track selection.
I still give him credit for all that hes done for the community, and bringing the sounds to ibiza (i read it on cdnow.com)
As for his mixing. I think his mixing is tight and smooth, sometimes he fades out, and thats fine with me. |

Good point, but for a set to be good, at least to me, dosnt mean it is danceable. NY is a great set with a lot of emotional songs IMO. Tranceport is goopd as well, but not quite as good as NY....
just dont agree with "danceability" directly meaning good.

:D
actually what makez a good set is a set filled with emotion.
Whether the emotion is upbeat, energetic, sad or whatever
and damn me if Oakey can bring them out good! :)
His DJing skills *ARE* pretty good (eventho Cox doesn't think so..heh)
and as for Perfecto as a label -- I do like the music that comes out of that place :) |

Oakie is obviously trying to make it big in America at the moment and I think he's modified his style to suit the American taste to be honest ... he couldn't just go over there and spin super epic trance, and still get to remix Madonna and all the other that he's done.
If that makes him a sell out then good on him I say, I'd never begrudge him his big commercial-record-label payday after all that he's done for the trance scene, it wouldn't have been the same without him. |

you know what i say? all the Oakie haters!! :whip: :whip:
they're all bandwagoners that are just trying to sound like "underground" trance afficionados... "Oakie's gone commercial, he's sold out" blah blah... shut up. Man i'm sick of everyone always crying..... if you dont like him don't download his . that simple. 9/10ths of all the people who bash oakie here have never seen him live. I've seen him thrice the last year, every set was different, and kicked ass.
His mixing skills haven't gone down, and he's not getting worse. Don't be such pussies to say what it is you don't like: track selection.
Well, guess what? I am a tranceaddict. I like armin, tiesto, ferry, marco v, gielen, (some) judge, and DEFINITELY oakie.
Long live Oakie. :stongue: :stongue:

Let`s compare it with football players: They are young and play really good and everyone cheers them, but then they get older and don`t play that well anymore and suddenly people are saying "he sucks" forgetting what he`s done in the past.
If you`ve liked Oakenfolds sets from 99 then don`t bash him for what he spins now. Be fair and say: "I love the stuff from 99", just don`t call him Oakenfool or whatever just because you don`t like his style now.
I know the football example isn`t the best but also all the artists who didn`t evolve their style disappeared after some time. Good example for evolving artists are Madonna and Robby Williams. Oakenfold has definitely evolved his style into something new, so what? Don`t bash him for that. Accept him as the artist he is. Noone forces you to listen to him. |
