Yet another computer help thread

Here's the sob story:
I moved to Waterloo and I'm staying with some people that share a network. I have my computer connected to it as well. The only problem is that the internet stops (only on MY computer) not even a day after one of the guys that lives here "fixes" it. He has "fixed" it about 4 times, and the same thing keeps happening. It says that there's a problem with the IP address. I have it set to obtain one automatically, and all my other TCP/IP settings are automatic as well. And when I click on "repair" it says that it could not renew my IP address. Does anyone know anything about this problem?

why dont you just manually put the ip address in it, i'm guessing it's probably a linksys router you're on, so just set it to the 192.168.1.123
(the "123" could be anything, but you should have it to some obscure number so it doesn't conflict with anyother person on the network..aka the guys on .101, 102,103...etc)
if its not a linksys, it's still not hard to figure out IP the router dishes out to clients.
shouldn't be too hard, i didn't give you step by step, but somone in the house should be able to do that for you.

Ok, this is what I know: it's a Pentium III 864 MHz desktop. Not wireless. and I looked at the router and it says SMC Barricade.
And it's not the cable :( |

check to see if the dmz host is enabled, my smc cuts out my dads internet whenever i enable the dmz...you could install new firmware instead, but w/e..i'm too lazy to find a link,
so type in 192.168.2.1 in your browser, there probably isn't a password, so just click 'login', if there is a password, ask, then go to somthing like advanced settings -> firewall -> if the firewall is enabled, there will be a little sub menu under the firewall button that comes up, click dmz and disable it.
if the firewall is disabled, then that automatically means the dmz isn't on, which means the dmz isn't the problem.

but she may not be losing her IP address. regaridng that, the next step would be to, from a command prompt:
1. type "ping 127.0.0.1", (without the quotes), and note the results - this is known as "pinging the loopback", and tests the packet's destination route within your computer to assure the interworkings are functional.
2. type "ipconfig", (without the quotes) hit enter, and note your IP address, as well as the default gateway, which is the IP address of the router.
3. type "ping [IP address]", (without the quotes) where [IP address] is the address you noted in step 1, and note the results - this tests the communication and functionality of your network card.
4. type "ping [default gateway]", (without the quotes) where [default gateway] is the default gateway's IP address you noted in step 1, and note the results - this test the travel route to the router and back.
I assume step 4 is where her problem is, since it seems her problems have started since she arrived at her new place. I wanted to start easy, which is why I'm taking baby steps with my first post, and suggesting a cable replacement.
Katie, try my first post, and if it's a Linksys router, just ping 192.168.1.1 (since that's likely the router's IP address). That assumes your computer's internet access was working ok prior to this new place.
Two other possible issues/solutions to test after pinging the router and trying another cable:
a. you may need updated Sympatico software is that's your internet service. I don't believe Rogers has an application that runs on your computer for their access - can anyone confirm?
b. if nothing else works, and there's a geek in the house, they can probably make your computer DMZ (a simple setting on the router) on that network for easier access. Don't ask - cross that bridge if you need to. |

it's not weird...
on your PC, click Start > Run, type in CMD, hit Enter.
type ipconfig. note the default gateway. that's the router's ip address.
is it different than 192.168.2.1?
type the default gaetway in the address bar of your router.
also, if your computer can't communicate with the router, you won't be able to do this from your computer.
in that case, ipconfig and get the default gateway from another computer on the network.
and you should then try my steps 1 and 2 from my second post, because setting up a DMZ only works if the problem is getting past the router, not getting to it, which seems like could be your issue.

LOL no im not THAT stupid....
here's an update: I just started the command prompt or whatevz, and when i typed in ping 127.0.0.1, it sent and received the 4 packets so there was 0% loss. but THEN i did ipconfig. it shows my autoconfiguration IP address, and my subnet mask, but there is NO default gateway.... |
