This weekend I will dj at luna lounge in san francisco and I am spinning with vinyl only. I am just curious as to which needles do you guys bring with you when you go to the club. I only have headshell based needles and not the concorde style i always see at clubs. Will that be a problem? Also why do most people use concorde style needles? Also should i clean my vinyl and needles, is it very important?
All these questions may seem stupid but last thing I want to do is upset a club owner
on a final note, what do you guys usually charge for club gigs? (in this case a gig with 300 people and 15 dollars per person at the door). |

| It's always a good idea to have backup carts when you're at a gig. DJs should always bring extra cables, adapters, carts when doing a gig. As to what carts, just bring whatever carts you have. |

Perhaps if you are a wedding Dj with your own mobile disco.
As a Club DJ you should only ever need to supply your record/CDs and Hedphones if DJing in a convetional manner. Obviously if you are using a Lap Top you need to supply Firewire connections and Cables ect but thats about it. You you are a Dj who Spins Vinyl or Cds you need to make the club aware in your booking agreement that you want two good needles and a fully functioning mixing desk and tables or you can refuse to perform.
DJs are only as good as their last gig and if the equipment means you are going to put on a poor show then you shouldn't be forced to play.. |

Ill be playing for 5 hours and the back up carts I have are stanton 505sk's and use Shure M44-7's for my regular set-up.
On a side note, I am a mobile dj and I always bring double of everything cause I always had problems with equipment each time i would play a gig. |

That's fine and dandy, but we don't all live in a perfect world. I guess you've never broken a needle, or had one crap out on you. And I guess you've never shown up to the club early to find that whomever was mixing last night unplugged some stuff so now you're one RCA short, or maybe your guest DJ shows up and wants to use a CD deck he brought, but he forgot forgot the cord because he's an idiot. It's always better to be prepared for small mishaps that can and do happen quite often than to look like an idiot. I'm sure you're used to that though. |

If you're a local DJ just starting out then that's a piss-poor attitude to have, and they'll probably consider dumping you. However, if you've made a name for yourself and are a respected local, then I don't see a problem with you doing that. |

First and foremost, I am refering to CLub DJing, not mobile discos, wedding Dj ect.
It is up to the venue to make sure all epuimpent is in working order. Unless you are the one running the night it should never cross your mind. |

So to ask for the basic equipment to perform is a piss poor attitude? It must be a funny way clubs are run where you come from.. |

It's not the dj's problem if the equipment isn't up to a working standard, it's the promoter of the night. At the end of the day, if a dj walks out a venue because the equipment doesn't work, who looks bad? The dj who brought his records and was ready to play, or the promoter who wasn't able to take care of a basic necessity for running a night. |
