Locked GSM phones... How to unlock them?

i think it's disgusting that you have to buy a phone through a phone company in Canada and that they then have the nerve to lock them. After spending hundreds of dollars on my phone they should have no right to do this. I could understand if it was a freebie phone but even then you are locked to their plan for X number of years in exchange.

I called Rogers and their reasoning is that they have agreements with many countries around the world so that they feel they are justified. meanwhile in most of these countries, coverage can be had for 10-15% of the expense of what Rogers charges.

First: i will be writing the CRTC and Consumers Affairs along with Rogers itself to express my disgust at what should clearly be an illegal practice.

Second: I want to know how I can go about unlocking my phone so I no longer have to be held hostage to these nitwits.

Some advice would be appreciated

With all the butthead things that we make illegal in this country, why is it that the most obvious things are still allowed?

from what I've heard it can be anywhere from 100-200 bucks.

jay, hit up howardforums.com. that's the forum for cell phone geeks.

you can probably find out how to set your phone to start your car there.

There's a kiosk on the ground floor of the Eaton Centre (near Urban Behavior) that unlocks phones too. Its not cheap, I know that.

did you already get a contract with rogers? read it carefully. i remember going over it a long time ago and it says that you waive the right to sue them. that could have been a contract for cable or internet too... can't remember.

well whatever the case. Im definately going to make some stink with consumers affairs and the CRTC. This is MY phone, not rogers'. So they can go to hell.
