ever had to mix out of a rap track? how was this move done?

I was at a club last week and one of the trance DJ's had to mix out of a rap track. I, in my n00b state, would have been terrified to mix out of this. The trance dj did a simple trick, if you could call it that, in order to kind of stop the track completely and I am trying to put the image in my head of how he did this and maybe some of you more experienced can figure out what I am talking about and lend me some insight...

basically, at the end of one of the bars on the rap track, you heard one loud BOOM bass note on the incoming trance track. At this very moment the rap tune ended suddenly.

When I try to do this, the only way I know how is to slide the fader to the middle immediately. But I can't cut the rap tune out immediately because I have to drop the fader down with my fingers which isn't an instant cut in sound. Takes like 1/5 a second to drop the sound to 0 with the fader.

what basic, fundamental skill am I overlooking here?

could probably just use the channel levels on the mixer i suppose...

i don't know the terminology and everything, but a lot of dj's will mix without the cross fader and use the levels instead. something that you'll see a lot of guys do is at times kick up the volume on the level of the incoming track for a single beat to give it that "boom"...maybe that's what he did...

thats what i mean by pushing the fader down with my fingers. but this isnt an instant thing. takes about 1/5 a second for the sound to be completely gone.

just another thought...

maybe it was just something as simple as turning off the table?

hmmm. wouldnt this cause the record to brake on its own causing a wind down sound?

it would be easy to do on a cdj...zabiela turns off his cdj's all the time in the club while he works the efx-1000

true. but this club is behind the times...lol...using only vinyl.

maybe you could just switch off the channel on the mixer?

i mean you have to flip the channel into the right position (example line 2) to get sound to come out of it right? so maybe he just turned off that channel that way?

sorry i wish i had a better answer than just guessing hehe...

the first thing i would think of doing is cutting the bass of the outgoing rap track and the incoming trance track for the last two to four beats and then slap the bass knob back up on the trance track for a "cutting" effect. it would sound lame if you did it all the time though.

Well I think the whole point of the sudden mix was that the tracks would be such different speeds

It's pretty easy to just whack the crossfader over and start a track at the same time

I've seen guys do it where they essentially just cut the power to the outgoing hip hop track and used a fader start on the incoming track, essentially just killing the hip hop track on phrase and slamming in the first note of the EDM track on beat. The speed difference is a little odd to hear, but it worked...

But I've definitely also mixed out of a hip hop (and a LOT of other weird genres, "Ween" anyone? :p) into House music on more than one occasion... :)

I don't really see why... on my mixer the faders are loose enough so I can just slam them down and it sounds just like I would had powered the deck down.
