yeah, it's called WinFS...
i just went to make sure, and they say it will not be builtin in Vista, but will be available as an add-on for it in 2007. actually, there is a beta version of that thing, that you can install for Windows XP.
it is a huge step forward, and it's built on top of ms sql server 2005 code, basically making your whole file system a big database (with all the perks: additional attributes, faster search, transactions, etc...)
