Computer Buying guide. Dell/IBM/Gatewayt vs Homemade

My pops wants a new comp, however i don't have the time nor the will to put one together myself. So, i'm looking around at Dell.com for some nice ones. However, i know that dell often locks you in with them and you're unable to upgrade and/or change some specs around without going to them or editing the BIOS.

Out of all the manufactors, which would you say is the best to turn to in terms of quality, satisfaction and getting a good deal for a price? Or is putting one yourself still the best way to go?

My dad's friend just got a bunch of computers and wanted to set up the wireless connection and secure it, so I came over. Everything was pretty good until I started up the powerhouse HP computer. Right out the box, it could not find a hard drive. Simplest answer is to open the box and see if the cable is even connected to the HD. But I'm no legal expert, so I don't know if opening the case (breaking a tape or something)would void the warranty. During my equipment check before putting it all back into the box, I wonder where the OS/Recovery disk is. I've built my computers for the past 6 years, but is it standard these days for AIO packages to have it on the hard drive itself?

DIY for cost and preference.

nope. no. never. uh-uh. negative. those big companies only exist coz of business & govt purchases + the mum & dads who dont know any better. if you can find a place that will put it together for you, thats your best bet imo.
