RAID 0 arrays

This is the first time I hear there is an increased risk of failure :conf:
The way I understand it is if there was a failure, well you're out of luck and you basically lose your data ( which makes sense when you understand the way the data is split between 2 or more hard drives in a Raid 0 strip ).
On the other hand does having a Raid 0 strip increase the risk of failure? I really don't think so.
Ps: the subject of perfomance increase using a Raid 0 strip is highly debated. It's also totally pointless if you're doing things that don't require high hard drives speed access and large file handling ( video editing and servers are the main subjects here ) |

well, in a way it does increase risk. Before, the risk of losing your data was the percentage of hard drives that fail. With a raid 0 you double that up. |

So you say it's faster but exactly what are YOU gaining from the speed?
Where's the need for faster speeds justified in your particular case? |

is it faster? yes, will you notice? no. it's like DSL and Cable internet... DSL normal range is about 1.5MB in my area while cable is around 3MB in my area.
in my home made spiffy chart it will look like this:
DSL__________|xxxxxxxxxxxx
Cable________|xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
normal usage__|xxxxx
You see the cable is faster, but in reality will anybody notice the difference? HELL NO! Not unless you transfer tons of data at a time. Instead of getting a crappy RAID 0 configuration, use the money to max out your RAM. |

increased write/read speed as data written on multiple controllers on multiple drives. however, the lack of fault tolerance makes this almost completely useless
the only thing raid0 would be good for is storing big video files that you already have backed up |

I would only suggest RAID 0 if you are going to use that configuration for your operating/programs drive, but I would keep data on independent disks or a RAID 1 config.
Oh and if you arn't maxing out your bandwidth on the internet you arnt using it enough!

Raid 0 has no advantage in "very fast hard drive access." All it does is increase data transfer speeds. |
