Using a LCD TV as a computer monitor?

Is there any downsides to this?

I found a 27" ViewSonic N2750w (27" HDTV LCD) for a GREAT price and was wondering if something like this would be suitable to use as a computer monitor?

Specs of TV:

some of the ultra large lcd's look crappy for computer use. that might not be the case for this display but I'd try to see it in use at a store before buying. seems like a lot of screen for the money. let us know how it turns out for you.

I work at best buy and I get this question everyday.
Basically it comes down to this,The LCD tv's are made for watching tvs,you can use them as a monitor but the thing is that computer monitors work better with computer and the refreshing rate is alot faster compare to the LCD tv's.Also most computers use VGA to connect to the monitors and VGA is a analogue connection and not digital.

Now on some of the LCD tvs they also provide you with DVI inputs and I know most MAC computers use DVI.DVI has a much better quality then VGA.but then again not all small LCD's come with DVI.

Bottom line is that it is not good to use your LCD TV mainly as a computer monitor, but if you gonna use it to check emails or browse the net then thats fine, but if you are planning to use it more then that then I recommned to buy a computer monitor instead.

I hope that helped :p

I work for Dell.. The main downside of using LCD TV for a pc monitor is that it can only support XGA resolution... it will not support sxga or uxga so pretty much you cannot set where you can set smaller icons and view larger area...

Most lcd's are VGA so it would be a quality of crt monitor or an analog flat panel.. which is not bad at all but not as good as a digital dvi...

As long as you dont care about resolution factor go for it... but IMO that single factor kinda kills the whole purpose of having a large screen...

Dell came out with 30inch digital flat panel in the beginning of the year which is a monster however it requires dual graphics card.. Step down would be a 24"... You can get some good deals on those right now

as others have stated, its a matter of resolution & refresh rate, both of which are superior in computer monitors. you play a twitch FPS on a tv LCD and it\'ll bleed like a motherfvcker. not sure what the resolution limits are, but they wouldnt approach the top-notch monitor limits.

The price on the TV is $799.99 Canadian, which is hard to overlook for a 27" HDTV LCD TV...

The max reso is something like 1366x768 with an 8ms response time which is equivalent to most newer LCD monitors (i.e. Samsung).

I'm running dual NVIDIA 6600GT's in SLI as video cards and I use my computer for everything, it's pretty much on for like 12 hours a day... But nothing more than surfing the net and I guess chatting and mixing and stuff like that...

i have a sony 40" xbr1 lcd and i have my computer hooked up to it via VGA (wish it had a DVI connection), but with the VGA the resolution is pretty nice. I can watch divx on it no problem (almost HD quality 480 at most) i say go for it, it's absolutely worth it although i mainly use it for TV, i just like the capability of connecting a MCE to control my mp3 and movie files as entertainment center media.

My setup
Sony KDL-V40XBR1
AMD Thoroughbred 2700+
GeForce TI-4200 (yea bitches its still running)
Sony STR-DE998 7.1 Surround

Oh yea, make sure you have a HDMI connection for digital HD cable or HD DVD.
