So anyway, what's the exact difference between sunni and shia muslims? Do they have any different scriptures, or do they just use the same scriptures but are organized differently, like catholic and orthodox church? |

Well, all "sects of Islam" share the exact same scripture (i.e. The Quran). There's only one version of the Quran which all Muslims are supposed to follow. The divide is more of a political nature. It basically started with the question as to who should be Prophet Muhammad's successor. Muhammad, who died of some illness in a 2 week span, on his death bed, chose Ali (who was his cousin and son-in-law, also one of the first people ot except Islam, also one of the Prophets closest companions) to be his successor.
Umar, who was a powerful and prominent tribe leader before he accepted Islam and not particularly popular amongst the people even after he did, said that the Prophet was sick, old, and not in a mental state to be taken seriously. So he basically paid no heed to the Prophets wishes and will. Once the Prophet passed away, Umar became histerical and in denial of the fact that he was dead. This mourning, wheather genuine or superficial, convineintly continued until Abu Bakar, arrived from some trip/mission or the other back in Madina. Abu Bakr, another prominet figure but with a little more popularity amongst the people, convinced the majority that he should be the first caliph and is the rightful successor to the Prophet. Now, Abu Bakar and Umar were buddies and Umar willingly accepted him as the new leader, after which he became the second caliph.
Ali, refused to acknowledge this at first. Abu Bakr who was pissed that Ali wasn't submitting to his leadership, asked Umar to coerce him into it. Umar arrived at Ali's house. He demanded that Ali open the door and come out. Ali, who was with his wife Fatima (who was also the Prophets daughter), said he couldn't at the moment. Fatima, who was pregnant with Ali child (making the kid the Prophets grandchild), said that she was in there with him and to give them their privacy. Umar simply broke in, mortally wounding Fatima in the process, who was near the door at the time. There was a miscarriage and she also died from this injury.
Now many Muslims know as "Shi'at Ali" or something which basically means "the party of Ali" or something to that effect, refused to give up their alligence to Ali and recongized only him as the true successor of Muhammad (who, as I said earlier, Muhammad has chosen himself).
These Muslims were also coered and persecuted, and infact, there was a even a civil war at one point. Ali eventually decided to compromise, in order to keep Muslims united and detering a further divide.
Fast forward a generation. Another major event that occured was when the Prophets grandson Hussain and many of his friends and family were persecuted and eventually slaughtered by the "caliph" Yazid. Sunni however still recognize Yazid as a legitimate Caliph and insist that his generals ed up on the battle field, which is rubbish. The terms Shia and Sunni didn't come into use until after this event. Sunnis also consider Abu Bakar and Umar to be legitimate caliphs and successors of the Prothet, where as Shias do not.
Shia have basically been pursecuted through out history, and depending on messed up the power structure they lived in was, were even killed and massacred.
So, to sum up, Sunnis have mostly been the passive majority submitting to the power structure, and the Shia are the ones that get screwed all the time.
The Wahabis, another group that splintered off from Sunnis, are extremely fanatical and violent nuts. They control Saudi Arabia. The taliban were wahabis, and they went to Shia villages and literally massacred them using methods similar to the Nazis. Pretty sick stuff :(. The even desecrated the grave and burrial site of Imam Hussein (the Prophets grandson :wtf: ). The extremely fanatical and militant distortion of Islam usually find its roots in/ties to the Wahabism. Which is another reason why I am somewhat pissed at the cozy relation between Saudi Arabia and the US. The Saudis are usually the ones funding all these different terrorist groups.
My dad is Shia and my mom Sunni. I myself do not identify with eigther group. I'm simply Muslim. And I'm pretty disgusted by and sick of this ridiculous internal conflict is still going on, and the spread of fanatical views in the "old world" (i.e. Middle East/South-east Asia). And it's only getting worse and more fanatical with aggressive US policy :(. The "Imams" & "Mullahs" over there now a days are mostly illiterate bufoons holding on to their power by dividing the people and causing internal conflict. It gotton so bad in the past few years that people opposing sets have actually gone into Shia/Sunni mosques and opened fire on people while they were praying! :wtf: A pretty sad state of affairs.
