About how much $ do you think A dj like Tiestor Pvd Ferry will get for a decent gig?

I think before you start to dj you should read a lot about music. The structure & math behind every kind of music. what 4/4 is what bpm is temp etc.. Scratching, Beatmatching, cueing. Try messing around fruity loops or reason and see how the 1-9-17-33-41-57 etc has an effect on a song and then listen to full singles hearing it in effect. Then go to your friends house and practice beatmatching & mixing and save up for your own good equipment if your serious about dj'ing. I would say go for cdj's, but still try to learn how to mix with vinyl first.. Once you know how to use vinyl djing you can easily transition to cdj's.

But I wonder how many poor kids would make really good DJs and how many brats with rich parents think they're the next Tiesto?

Of course there's going to be some of that; but if you really want to play, then you'll figure out a way to do so. The rich kids who aren't serious about it and just wanna do it to be cool will lose interest within the year, or end up running a cheesey radio show playing tunes they download from Soulseek and dubbing them the "next big hit" from Europe. The furthest they'll ever go in technical skills is moving the crossfader left to right, and they'll be worshipped by thousands of sheep.

Meanwhile; we'll sit back, relax, and enjoy the groove.

I heard DJ AM gets $150,000 for a single gig. Not sure if it's true.

I agree mostly, but I think theres alot of good DJs that simply go un-noticed...I see it all the time over here...DJs get booked at clubs through connections, not through skill...

...although it is really part of a DJ's job now to promote him/herself and make those connections.

It seems like, when it comes down to it...the guys with talent and skill stick around longer.

Don't forget to add in the costs of going to the emergency room when you stab yourself in the ear after messing up your demo recording at the 70 minute mark.

:(

I spent around $1000 on my initial set up.
Then $200 upgrading my headphones.
Then $950 for a new mixer
Then $1600 for some new decks
In addition to probably $2000 on vinyls.
And about $400 on materials to build a booth.

I also received about $300 bucks worth of cartridges/stylii as gifts.

But I do it for the love of music and cos I have fun doing it. I have made $0 from djing and in all likelihood thats all I'll ever make.

msz
i wonder what the total money spent for all my records will be in the future ; when i stop. what am i saying.. ill be djing till i get alzheimer's.

by that time they wont even be making records anymore.
