The industry can defined in two major ways:

-freelancers ( working from home what not ) or independent companies contracting for others

-working inhouse.

The business of advertising is in continuous revival and slump. You just have to know when to catch the wave.

You also need to define what medium in advertising you want to go in. It is rather large, consists of graphic designers, film people, writers, etc etc the list is huge

Advertising basically deals with direct selling and exposing a particular product or service to the target market using mediums like television, radio, magazines, internet etc.

Marketing though is much broader area which covers not only deals with direct selling but public relations, communications, builing customer relationships, understanding the psychology of the consumers, understanding a company's internal workings and informing th target audience about how the company works - bringing to the target audience into their evoked set...

By evoked set I mean,

hmm, let me give you an example,

if I say 'shoes',the first few things which would come to my mind is Nike, Reebok, Adidas......

Thus, Nike, Reebok etc...would be in our evoked set and the respective companies have done good marketing.

In a line:

If I am advertising, I would sell you my product, I would say thank you and then I would not care if you die tomorrow.

But, if I am marketing, then I would sell you my product, I would say thank you very much but I want you to live safely and happily because tomorrow I would want to screw some more money out of you!

I like your answer. I'm a marketing major, but I ultimately want to get into advertising. Unfortunately the program at our school is geared towards the sales/PR aspect of marketing, rather than advertising. To illustrate my point, Personal Selling is a required class in the Marketing curiculum whereas Advertising is only an elective. I'm most likely going to grad school learn more about the ad industry.

Some more advice for BTG...advertising isn't just the "creative" part such as creating print ads or commercials. Account managing and media buying are very important functions in an ad agency, so you don't have to be a great artist in order to work at an ad agency.

Advertising is just one aspect of marketing, which is a much broader field.
