Processor vs RAM??

Whats more important when running your sequencer the speed of your processor or the amount of RAM you have?
Centra Spike
In general, cpu by far.

well unless youre like me and just love those NI orchestra packs that really gobble up your ram.......

can anyone recommend a good cpu then? because mine is a ty celeron d and when running 2 sequencers its fond of crashing on me.
Final Call
AMD or Intel...mainly something running around 3.2 ghz could be good. I hate working on a Celeron...i have 2.4 now..and it takes forever for me to make a tune. I was usually working on a P4 3.2..and the difference is like..what the hell. My friend did a little experiment for me since we both have a Celeron. Well if you dont have money for a better CPU...atm you could attempt to get as much RAM as you can. He has a gig..and it allows him to run 6 Z3ta's at once..and then it'll start getting laggish. So maybe getting 2 gigs of ram would help for the time being. Figure out what you would want to do. :D

Sure, if youre using gigs of samples you will need lots of ram. I assume most producers use more vst instruments and effects though.

You cant use an amd processor with your motherboard. If you havent got the money for a new system just get the fastest compatible pentium 4 you can afford. And just to let you know, a faster processor probably wont stop crashes. Updating your software and drivers is more likely to help.

it doesnt matter

use it as a coaster if it doesnt fit

Well just to run a sequencer doesn't require much of either. It depends on what your running inside your sequencer that matters. If it's mostly VSTi synths and plugin effects then CPU power is king. If it's samplers like Kontakt running big samples then RAM is king. So figure out what your gonna use inside your sequencer. Generally, you will want at least 1gig of RAM to be safe though.

And forget the Althon, look at an OpteronX2 instead, the socket 939 is very competitively priced and beats the AthlonX2 in all aspects.
messytechie
isnt opteron socket 940?
