Home theatre gurus: HD-DVD or Blu-ray?

What's your take on this situation? Seems that Blu-ray has way more manufacturer and movie studio backing, but HD-DVD is a load cheaper.
Also, HDMI is the way to connect these bad boys. My LCD TV only has 1 HDMI input which is currently being used for my digital cable box, so uh what would I do should I get an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player? Switch the digicable box to component?
This wouldn't be happening for about a year or so when the prices of these bad boys have dropped, but what do you all think of these standards? Are we going to see something again like VHS and Betamax where the early adopters are going to be stuck with a useless player after one standard takes over?
Discuss. |

They are creating another Beta vs VHS like war in the marketplace. (as you stated).
Hopefully Sony will lose again.
I noticed something similar with the DVD+R and -Rs. I see the majority of people buying -Rs, even though +R is superior.
And yeah, once one reigns supreme, the other will be a paper weight.
As for your HDMI problem...SUCKER! Every TV we've ever sold at work has only had 1 HDMI port (if any). So I suspect this to be common problem.
Also, working in that sector, also of people believe DVDs are HD. They look at me like a crackhead when I say they arent.
On an unrelated topic I was at a Costco today (not the one I work at) and the bastards had a 65" Sharp Aquos. s. (BTW only one HDMI input) |

In that case you should use component cables with your digital cable box. You shouldn't notice any difference, plus you'd free up the HDMI slot.
Question is: how would you connect both your DVD player AND your PS3 to your TV?
Answer: connect the PS3 to the HDMI slot and use it as your primary DVD player. The fact that it's a Blu Ray player is the kicker.
The above scenario is why I think Blu Ray will win out in the end, despite the higher cost. Also, it has a higher storage capacity than HD-DVD, meaning the technology has more room to grow and evolve. |

I don't think Sony will lose out...
HD-DVD has these companies backing it: Toshiba, LG, Thomson/RCA, Paramount, Studio Canal, Universal, Warner, the Weinstein Company.
Blu-ray has: Hitachi, Mitsubishi, LG, Sharp, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Philips, Thomson/RCA, Sony Pictures (including MGM/Columbia TriStar), Disney (including Touchstone, Miramax), Fox, Paramount, Warner, Lions Gate.
Also, Blu-ray discs hold a load more and also support 1080p resolution, where HD-DVD does only 720p and 1080i. |

^ Aye. It's an all out war!
But like I said with my +R and -R comment. People probably wont care which is superior, they'll just buy what their friend tells them to buy. |

Zoiks. Do you have any idea a 1080p TV will cost when they come out?!??!
Blu-ray will nail the high end market hands down. But there's strength in numbers with average joes who just want something cheap that will do a decent job. |

Of course, of course, but that's a few years in the future. Futureproofed standard, I'd say Blu-ray is. I'm quite content with my 720p as it is now, 'cause everybody knows its better than 1080i anyway. |

My goodness, you know how many times I've argued that point.
Thank you Cale for understanding the importance of that lil p. |

I could never do what you do for a living because I'd punch some fat retard in the face for arguing with me about something he obviously knows nothing about. |

We've gotten into screaming fights with people!!!
Example: Some fat old man saying DVD+Rs can only store data and not video.
Another example: My friend Mike being asked if he even knows what an MP3 is.
It's the money that keeps me there, Cale. Not the joy of explaining to baby boomers the difference between LCD and Plasma.
(Or Blu-ray and HD-DVD) ;) |
