Hah! I knew a mobile DJ who absolutely DISPISED dance music but would always have to play it because it was the big thing at the time (early 90's). At one point during a gig, he actually lost it, got on the mic, and shouted to the crowd, "How can you listen to this !?"
He moved out of town less than a year later. |

I think there's some evidence for PvD.
I recall a thread in which a couple people alleged that Paul van Dyk plays much more techno when in Germany. That might be to suit the local crowd, or because he's tired of the trance he plays in the UK/USA/etc. You can also tell that PvD's taste is much more varied by listening to his Radio Fritz show. He plays breaks, lower bpm stuff (Momu comes to mind), and techno. In a two hour liveset, it's usually pure trance. |

In my mind if I had a radio show and was a top jock I think I'd try to do things differently on a radio show.
Did you ever consider that perhaps he wants the show to be more chill or what not?
This is purely speculation on my part.
And also taking into account differences in styles according to the place you play that is a very common occurence.
Many djs don't know for sure what to play when they go somewhere so maybe they will go the easier road or play exactly what they think the crowd will be expecting of them and not experiment excessively.
I have seen many djs put down their game face because they didn't know if the crowd would accept something different. |

| I think DJs should like what they play. I think they should have a passion for the music, else they probably wont put in the effort it takes to make a good set that both him or herself will like and the crowd will as well. DJing is no different then an artist putting together music, if it's just for money making purposes, then there will be no passion, just passion for the money. As evident with Paul Oakenfold in the past few years, one should have a passion, and if they don't have the same passion, then they should quit and do something else. |
