me.

Hersh has the unfortunate ability of having some pretty reliable information from inside sources. Is Bush ing crazy? Nukes for 's sake? Some choice quotes:

quote:
One former defense official said the military planning was premised on a belief that "a sustained bombing campaign in Iran will humiliate the religious leadership and lead the public to rise up and overthrow the government," The New Yorker pointed out.

Hey, how's that for familiarity? Anyone heard that line before somewhere?

quote:
But the former senior intelligence official said the attention given to the nuclear option has created serious misgivings inside the military, and some officers have talked about resigning after an attempt to remove the nuclear option from the evolving war plans in Iran failed, according to the report.

"There are very strong sentiments within the military against brandishing nuclear weapons against other countries," the magazine quotes the Pentagon adviser as saying.

Thank God there's still some sensible people left in the Pentagon. I almost thought Rummy got rid of most of them.

quote:
The adviser warned that bombing Iran could provoke "a chain reaction" of attacks on American facilities and citizens throughout the world and might also reignite Hezbollah.

"If we go, the southern half of Iraq will light up like a candle," the adviser is quoted as telling The New Yorker.

quote:
One former defense official, who still deals with sensitive issues for the Bush Administration, told me that the military planning was premised on a belief that “a sustained bombing campaign in Iran will humiliate the religious leadership and lead the public to rise up and overthrow the government.” He added, “I was shocked when I heard it, and asked myself, ‘What are they smoking?’ ”

quote:
Late this winter, the Joint Chiefs of Staff sought to remove the nuclear option from the evolving war plans for Iran—without success, the former intelligence official said. “The White House said, ‘Why are you challenging this? The option came from you.’ ”

The only thought I would possibly entertain if this were true is - is Bush trying to start Armeggeddon? Again, IF this is true, what the is Bush thinking? Is this honestly the right path? Is Bush trying to get us all ing killed?

Who the would support a pre-emptive nuclear strike? Is this honestly the best tactical method in regime change in an already unstable country?

Please tell me there are still a few people left in this Administration that doesn't have their heads up their asses.

I know why we won't go to war with IRan. Their weapons are not Russian made so they have an advantage.

Partly true.

Up until the revolution we supplied them with vast amounts of US military equipment, including F-14's and missiles for them.

But since the revolution they have lost all support for their US made equipment, their US made fighters sit rusting in the desert for the most part.

On the other hand they have been able to buy the latest Russian military equipment and not only that, they have been working with Russian defense contractors on building their own equipment in house.

Iran is not Iraq, it will not be like the first Gulf War, Iranians have a lot of pride in Iran, even if they do not like their leaders, they love their country to a fanatical degree and will fight to keep FOREIGN invaders out.

If we choose a land war with them, losses will be heavy. I guarantee it, with hundreds of US dead per day and probably thousands more for the Iranians. Iran would not be adverse to using its stockpile of chemical weapons either, which includes Sarin and Mustard Gas.

We would probably see the first submarine combat in 50 odd years as well, as the Iranians have Alfa class diesel boats from Russia, which are fast and quiet. These new Shkval like rocket torpedoes worry me much, as these are big and fast and can punch a huge hole in anything they hit. Not only that, but they have Russian Tu-22M Backfires that have been outfitted for anti-shipping roles as well as a competent navel fleet that has fought with the US and observed them for many years since.

I am not saying the US would lose in initial combat, they would most surely win the short fight, but at a heavy loss rate that would be unacceptable to the US seeing that we can hardly stand to see 2000 some of our boys dead in Iraq. When that number is reached after a day of fighting in Iran I think there will be hell to pay for whoever is in power at the time.

Damn Nou you know alot of details about this.I didnt know alot about the Iranian military capabilities, but it seems like they are alot more powerful then I expected.
I have a feeling the Americans will underestimate Irans military and will pay the price big time.

Personally I want to see this happen. This would be the first real war we have had in almost 30 years and god knows we need one to really put the fear back into the hearts of our people and our politicians.

In a way you are right on this.I think it will have to take a real war in order for the Americans to wake and see what war really is.

Once I again I will say Americans dont have the balls to attack Iran because they know what they'll get in return.

Putting fear back in people is just my justification for the masses... :p

The world would be more interesting if there was nothing but a war than a major war and than just war.

yeah, was gonna post this when i saw it. thought it was a pretty good analysis as well.

i cannot believe that the US is discussing tactical nukes  thats horrendously stupid & scary and just ful. wtf are they thinking? if theres any incentive to arm yourself with nuclear weapons, its to have one used against your country.

wake the up america.
metalgearsolid
Ok, using nukes would be bad, real bad. I can see from where you say we shouldn't use nukes because that would be hypocritical. But I also know that the US gov wouldn't need to use nukes to beat the Iranians. What they have planed is a quick Airstrike destroying most weapon facilities of the Iranian gov. Than as the gov is in confusion they will arm the 'rebel' groups who will overthrow the gov. Yea, thats the way things will go.

The article mentioned something about 'rebel groups' in Iran which could be of use to the US gov.

Other than our minimal "help" in afghanistan, when has supporting "rebel groups" ever played out to the US's advantage. Cuba, most of Latin America, the Kurds, etc. everytime we "help" a "rebel group" we seem just to cause more grief to ourselves.

Maybe all the successful times are not public knowledge becuase they were succesful, but that is just wishful thinking.
