Nothing i've ever done has gotten me support from my parents.
It's actually gotten me down quite a bit in the past, and recently as well actually.
It's a pain in the ass when you can't share a hobby with anyone. When no one understand why you like something etc. Hence this place is savage!
I remember i went out and bought the Rio 500 mp3 player AGES back. 256mb onboard memory etc. Myself and my mate were the . lol My parents couldn't believe i had spent 250 quid on it! And went nuts at me. Little did they know mp3's would catch on a lot more then they thought. Next thing, 80% plus of people have one. (don't quote me i'm just waffling)
Anyway my next obsession was my car, the audio side of things. So i went out and bought €2500 worth of gear. (DLS A3 amp 780rms, Genesis 4ch amp 4x75rms, Resonant Engineering SE12" sub, DLS R5A fronts, Pioneer DEH P80mp)
Just to give you an idea of what went in..

And a picture or two of the work..

So you can imagine what my parents were thinking when i had just bought my first car (by myself) and then decided to strip the whole thing.
Anyway having gone on that tangent, I then decided to go for the whole dj'ing thing. (Big mistake!) lol, no i'm happy with everything so far, but the costs started spinning out of control. And it was just another reason for my parents to get annoyed at me.
I've actually found it annoying, that my parents haven't supported me. As i find it's more a hobby and something that puts a smile to my face then this HUGE expense (which they're not even paying for). Why they can't support what i like, is what i find difficult to accept. I suppose it's also cause a lot of my mates aren't into the dj'ing thing. Let alone good music.
Grand well that's all my posting for today finished lol.
The lesson i've learnt over the last few years is, If it makes you happy, go for it. It's completely worth it every time you slip those headphones on and hear that scratching noise and your legs start to hit the ground with the beat.. Love it!

A gigantic +1 to that!
I got a bunch of CDs, Mp3s, 2 CDJ200s and a VMC002. No one I know understood why I was buying those, or why I couldn't just "buy a 100$ cd player like everybody else". Everyone was criticizing me for it, telling me I should invest in my education instead  |

All we're doing is getting something to help us get through our education. We're not trying to stop it.
Granted sometimes we should be reading books instead of reading bars and phrases lol But that's bound to happen now and again.
:(
Please tell me we wont end up the same as them when we're older.. |

Originally I was only gonna read here, but some of you have reminded me of the things I have been through with those around me. Most of my mates get it now, but it took them around 10 yrs to catch on to the whole club/ rave / Dj thing. I heard many early criticisms especially from muso's but today it has become more genuinly combined and accepted, and many have found musical interest, tho mostly with house.
I equate my interest as that of my (late) grandads generation and the way some are obsessed with a miniture train set and the miniture charactes and trees etc.
A hobby is a true love affair, and as such should be treated with reverence. Indulge yourself. Whatever your interest.
As for the parents out there, ask them if they would prefer you to get a drug habbit like herion to spend your hard earned on.
And Tommy, get some new shoes mate> 2yrs? sheish :P |

my dad doesn't really understand the attracttion of dj'ing but has no problem understanding the fun of messing weith the music nor with the price of gear. He just bought a new organ that has an RRP of AUS$75,000. He's still remembered for taking out a home loan to buy an organ about 35 years ago, and has written into his will that whichever of his children produce the first grandkid gets all of his music gear.
Compared to that my expenses are minimal. Even my wife who has to suffer the expenses with me has told me to stop buying mp3's, just pay the extra for the wav files from now on. She doesn't go quite so far as to tell me to buy vinyl, so I have to treat myself every now and then to a big pile. |

I've never dared beginning calculating on how much i've used on vinyls and records, i'm sure that's 3x as much as what the gear costs itself.
And i'm familiar with the quotes you've mentioned from friends and familiy already. But it's all about priority! Even if they think you're insane :tongue3 |

| So far my family has been pretty supportive. The only thing they don't support is me having the music to loud! |

Reminds me of this guy who lived for tomorrows all of his life, saved every penny, spent ten years in school while eating as little as possible, never spending on anything, wearing cheap clothes and suffering through all of his education - only to obtain his degree and die in a car accident during the following month. The guy never got to live. |
