A somewhat related question, the terms UK, Britain, and England have always confused me somewhat. I tend to use them interchangeably to refer to "England," which ofcourse is kind of silly. I know the UK isn't just England. Could someone clarify these terms for me and which ones are appropriate refrences to what in formal and casual conversation?

England is just the country, england

United Kingdom (UK) Is England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

and I believe GB (Great Britain) is just England, Scotland & Wales

I may be mixed up, nobody who lives here actually calls themselves british, or from the UK, they just say their country/nationality.

If you're not exactly sure what part of Britain they're from, I'd take the safe route and refer to them as "British". The Scots, Welsh and Irish tend not appreciate being referred to as "English"... ;)

And us English prefer not to have them referred to as being English either :p It's like asking a Kiwi if they're Aussie

The UK = The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Great Britain = England, Scotland and that other one, oh yea, Wales

The 'UK' is the technical international name for our sovereign state

Well I'm English, British and European!

My nationality is British and so is yours! (Technically there is no "English Nationality" as England is not a sovereign state so no passports, also I think I recall reading someone getting a bollocking for putting "English" on their census instead of British!!)

Also I might point out that in terms of culture, areas of England have about as much in common with each other as they do with parts of Scotland, Wales, N Ireland or the Republic of Ireland (one of the 'home nations' too)

Cool, that make it alot more clear, except the last line, that makes it a little confusing. By "our sovereign state" do you mean line 1 or England?

I think the generation including us are mature enough to accept it's official but reasonable to realise nobody actually believes it except from on things like passports & those people stuck in the past :p
