The beautiful thing about EDM is that there is SO much music out there to be listened to. I mean, there is something new on a daily basis. So you really have to dig. I think as far as clubbing is concerned it has been brought out and controlled more then it used to be. For the music alone, it can really go either way anymore. That's my opinion on it anyway. |
Whereas with rock music there is not much to listen to. Only the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. All forms of rock after this have yielded little to no production, and electronic music is the only form of music where there is a variety and vast amount of. The only. |

Also, to the original poster, I don't really think that TATW is that underground. I'm not as familiar with KvA's show, though I'd expect it to be similar. |
that's what this thread is about establishing where one can set the barriers to underground stuff.
if i'm honest i'm not into the totally underground stuff, i just haven't got the time to find that kinda stuff. i know it's a crap excuse.
it's bad enough getting pretty "normal" sets (my def: avd, pvd sets etc...)at times
i dunno a lot of the stuff on TA I wouldn't even know where to start looking.
I'm hooked on the Vandit/Euphonic sound, I'm happy with that so I guess there is no need for me to look further,
I tend to find that artists cluster, e.g. the armada fraction,
i tend to not find most artists of a particular cluster interesting if i don't like the overall cluster |

open questions for everybody:
What is your theme, eclectic style, modus operandi and value system that only a small segment of like-minded people enjoy?
Who selectively caters to only to your interests?
Every theme, style, and value system that I can think of seems to be represented somewhere in the "mainstream", or the relatively mainstream at least. So it just makes me wonder if maybe underground is confined to specific themes and styles and values that I am not thinking of. |

| For some reason trance stops being trance once it gets underground. It gets pigeonholed as something else so the cool people can listen to it as well. |

| Underground is a measure of popularity just like the term pop[ular] music is. Whether it'd be in the EDM world, rnb, country, or any other music genre it is simply a status used to classify music which hasn't been heard by the masses yet. For example trance in Europe is commonplace so it's not considered underground nor is it pop either. If you were to spit out some trance artist names to your average top 40 listener in the United States chances are those artists would render underground to them because they have never heard of them. |

I thought trance was only trance if it was deep underground? Anything else and it's pop music, apparently. |

There seems to be 2 schools about this. I'm not sure which one I belong to myself. |

| tracks are underground if less then 130 people have heard it, and has been played less then 354 times. In a 60 mile radius. |

Underground is that which doesn't come to you. You must go to it.
Conversely, mainstream is that which always comes to you. Whether you like it or not.
Don't interpret this to mean that Underground dislikes advertising; it just dislikes blanket advertising to all, most especially people its aesthetes were not intended for and may even be repulsed or offended by it. Underground has a theme, an eclectic style, modus operandi and value system that it knows only a small segment of like-minded people will enjoy, so it selectively caters to only their interests. And that's all it's concerned about. Not money, power, attention, fame or its expanding influence, but just its mere existence. Its target demographic, likewise, knows about the Underground and will instinctively seek it out and enjoy it to satiate their needs. So it doesn't need to go to them. They will find it via their own methods.
The mainstream, of course, is for everyone, and will go that extra step towards satisfying the interests of people too lazy, too stupid, or too busy to go out and seek it out of their own accord. Thus: The mainstream will come to you. Unequivocably. You don't even have to get out of your house, or even off your couch. It will come straight to you, handed to you on a silver platter, open your mouth for you, pour itself down your throat, and even chew for you. You don't have to do anything except sit there and consume whatever the mainstream chooses to show you.
The people who don't enjoy this kind of culture enrichment are usually called "freaks". |
Well said, and so true! |
