I'm not sure which way you were taking this but I'd like to clear up some misconceptions about 'globalization' this immigration issue has caused.
The term 'globalization' does not refer to a literal disolving of borders. |
Bingo my friend, bingo. Globalization is the integration of worldwide trade between countries, not worldwide immigration. "It has brought diminishing national borders and the fusing of individual national markets. The fall of protectionist barriers has stimulated free movement of capital and paved the way for companies to set up several bases around the world."
Here's a beautiful article about globlization by the BBC encyclopedia section for those who are confused about its definition: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/special_...edia/711906.stm |

The term 'globalization' does not refer to a literal disolving of borders. Treaties like NAFTA, that are much the driving force behind it, are concerned with international trade. It focuses on increased global trade and the promotion of a global market with the removal of tariffs (a tax on imported goods).
There are side effects of globalization, such as the export of regional culture, which is really what people usually mean when they refer to globalization on a human-interaction level. But globalization can still exist and prosper in a world with clearly defined and enforced border lines. |
+1 dude. |

| Globalization frankly sucks. Doesn't work in reality and is a fancy way of saying communism is best for us. Notice you'll hear mostly liberals talk about how great globalism could be. America will be finished if pure globalism takes over. |

My, you certainly painted that with a broad brush stroke. Communism? Hardly. One could very well make the case that it's about Capitalism. Competitive advantage in action on a global level theoretically benefits us all, but that's hardly communism. Haven't you ever realized that it's the tree-hugging liberal socialists that show up at all of the anti-globalization protests? It's not about melting borders, it's about melting barriers.
Care to back up your statement with a little bit of meat? |

So America won't be finished, instead America, will have a stronger foothold around the world. |

We already have Globalism in effect and its causing problems in America right now. Jobs are being exported to countries with cheap labor like India, China, and other South American countries. People are being laid off their jobs for cheaper labor in other countries. Illegal immigrants are coming over taking jobs too. Btw, those tree huggers are protesting against corporate greed.
My thinking is Globalism won't stop with trade, but will move into politics too. Capitalism will disappear and the government will eventually be in charge of everything. Countries and societies won't have to compete any longer against each other because the world government will tell everyone what to do. |

Well I didn't mean it in the literal sense, obviously.
I meant that the world is culturally interconnected now and you can't compare our times with T.R.'s era. |

How do you figure globalization is a government thing? :conf:
It's a government's responsibility to guard and help their country's businesses, not run them... |

And that makes it communism? You might want to look at it from the other side of the equation as well. China and India are going through massive industrialization which will no doubt let their citizens enjoy a far greater standard of living in the future. Additionally, while it sucks to see some jobs leave the country, however it ultimately lowers the costs of production which is nice on your wallet.

Perhaps that's one of the things they are protesting against, but it's funny how the protesters are the loudest and most visibile at G-8 summits and pro-globalization functions.
If anyone hasn't read it, I highly recommend reading "The World Is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. You might just learn something.;) |

It drives me crazy when I hear this bull about "immigrants taking the jobs Americans don't want." This practically implies that there is no real "white American" unemployed. Are they trying to tell me that if you don't have a job and you might lose your home and all these other things you will still refuse to clean bathrooms, bus tables, fix lawns? To say Americans don't want these jobs is insane.
And how can people say that it does not drive wages down? Obviously the undocumented worker will take the job off the books at a lower wage and employers love it.
And how come people excuse this illegal behavior? Because they are desperate? What do you think most people trying to get in the United States legally are?
Wouldn't it be funny if a law past during the protests and the police just rounded them all up on the spot? That is humorous to me in a sick sort of way. Funny how they are expressing the rights of a country to which they have no legal ties. |

Everyone I know that went to protests were legal citizens. |

| Hey sunsnail I'm just poking fun. Can't you honestly tell though that the majority of the protesters were Hispanic for a reason? |
