Your method of programming synths...

So when your just messing around or trying to write a song, how do you go about programming your synths?

Do you...

a) Tweak presets you like...

b) Use presets you like...

c) Just mess around till you make something that sounds good.

d) Know the kinda sound your after and can almost perfectly reproduce that sound from your head to your synth.

I am interested to hear how you guys do it, cause most if not all of my sounds comes from C. It would be cool to see if there are skilled people who can literally know without touching their fav synth how to make a sound they hear in their head.

The first sounds I make tend to just be messing around. When the song begins to form up, then I start to create synths with specific sounds in mind. Either way is very easy. You just have to know your synths.

I tend to use A, B, and C alot. I Cannot reproduce the sounds that i want :D
aquila
Mostly C, sometimes D. Only ever did B once.
Liran-A
A and C I guess...

I'd love to be able to do 'd' but it's just so difficult. Does anyone know how to create the synth sound in the second breakdown of armin van buuren - sail ????

Started off using B then went onto A and now mostly on C trying to take on D.
D is probably most peoples desired aproach but is obviously the hardest to learn to do.
PutBoy
Either a or d, mostly.

I use samples more though. I like to use samples of real instruments instead. I create House, which explains that.

Hey. I usually use D less I'm feeling lazy for the day. Lots and lots and lots of practice and messing around is the only way to learn synthesis :).

Cheers,

C and D. (C mostly)

ok ok, I must admit I hate spending a lot of time programming sounds. When I have inspiration I just want to put the music down and do it quickly and easily. I usually get to know my equipment really good before I try to work on songs and take a preset and just change it enough (or add effects) so it doesn't sound like a preset.

Just about the same for me. Its hard to reproduce a sound from your head.
I have done it only a few times depending on how complex sound it is.
