I think Judaism and Christianity (and quite possibly Islam) began with someone who had true spiritual insight and wrote down a few of his ideas and developed a following, then died allowing people to add to the original text, changing much of it. Then once a significant following had developed they could use the text to gain and hold power over people. At the core of any religious text you can find some quite enlightened spiritualphilosophy that has been shrouded in various rules and codes designed to control people - and even then the rules are, for the most part, designed to allow society to run in a safe and efficient manner.
Scientology, on the other hand, was clearly founded as a money-making cult and continues to exist as one. The wacky ideas and structure remain essentially unchanged since their founder wrote them down. It is founded on totally bizarre concepts and the structure is clearly intended to bend people to the leader's will and make them part with as much of their money as possible. |
