| so yah..3 weeks ago this dood approaches me at work going "hey man, my names ben, i just started my own business and im 22" blahblah then tell sme hes going to retire in 5 months, thats right the mofo said retire and wanted me to become a prospect in his business..so as the vulnerable idiot i am..we exchanged numbers..little did i know, i went to this meeting at a hotel tonight (just got back) where some dood went on and on about how copying a business model will make you big bucks in the long run..going on and on about u start a business, you refer your friend, your friend refers a friend and so forth till eventually u got chain of people making you money. also introduced sucess stories of people all pimped out in real nice suites whose average age was 22 who were about to retire using this so called 'business model'. i did some research, to find out this is called multi level marketing (not a pyramid scheme which they emphasized a load at the meeting) and the company that runs these meetings throughout the us is quixtar/amway. has any1 else ever been a victim of this scam? thoughts, comments etc? |

| my dad convinced me to attend some seminar he heard about in san jose. got there, it was a freshly-built office building with all new furniture and a bunch of nice cars parked outside. ok i sit down and listen... same deal: multi-level marketing, heavy emphasis on 'not a pyramind scheme'... the idea was selling loans, securities and insurance. you pay $100 to become a peon who goes to learning seminars, then you take a test to become a licensed sales person, then you eventually become a sales manager when you refer enough peons who become sales people. they brought in a bunch of six-figure mid-20s sales managers who went on about how most of their income comes from the sales people working under them and they barely do anything for their money. i was like ok, i've heard enough.... good luck to you all! |

My friend dragged me to one of those meetings a few years ago. It's a total scam. The reason why they tell you all of these success stories is because they themselves need to recruit you in order for them to make any money. They try to make it legitimate by telling you that you are selling products online, but the only way you make money is by recruiting people yourself.
Also a few weeks ago I was in Target and some guy around my age came up to me and asked me about my post-undergrad plans. He was trying to get me interested in his pyramid scheme but I just let him know I wasn't at all interested. I felt bad for him because it's almost as if the people in charge of these things brainwash their recruits. |

lol, i went to one of those quixtar things.
and then when i got home i googled it and found it was part of the amway .
i knew it was a pyramid scheme, but i didn't know it was *that* big. that 's so stupid. |

We actually had a falling out because I told him to get out of it while he could, but he kept on doing it. Since then we've been cool, but we never talk about Quixtar/Amway. |
