Turn ON!
Paolo Mojo kicks off a new party at Avalon New York

Beginning Saturday May 6th, proper house music returns to one of the city’s most infamous and revered clubs with “ON” at Avalon. The one time church formerly known as Limelight will play host to a summer series of events kicked off by big room bangers Paolo Mojo and Yousef. They will be joined by ON resident DJ’s and all around nice guys Dany Veltri (Groovanauts) and Zach Roth (Chika NYC, Love).

The night will also serve as the release party for Paolo’s forthcoming mix CD “Balance 009,” slated for release on April 25, 2006. A genre-defying, funk-infected double-CD mix of booty-shaking house, melodic techno, and genuine classics, Paolo gives new meaning to the term "progressive house.” Says John Digweed, “Paolo Mojo is one of the most talented new DJs; he’s a man you’ll be hearing a lot more from,” while Lee Burridge raves “he plays good music!” and Hernan Cattaneo adds “He is constantly pushing and finding quality house music. One of the best new DJs for sure!” Photos, press clippings, and additional information can be found online at www.paolomojo.com.

ON’s second installment will showcase the talents of Montreal’s favorite DJ/Producer, Max Graham. “The ON button represents the start of all things electronic, but more importantly, it signifies that Avalon is once again part of our city’s thriving dance culture.” says ON resident Dany Veltri. We are excited to see house music returning to Avalon, with such stellar lineups that promise to get electronic music fans in the door and keep the dancefloor grooving til dawn.

Paolo Mojo:
Paolo Mojo's sound might be difficult to pin down, but this broad, innovative approach to his craft is making him a name on everyone's lips. His style incorporates elements of house, funk, techno, breaks, electro, disco and acid. “I’ve never understood this 'genre' bollocks,” he says. "To me the best DJs always select the best bits from a wide range of sounds and put them together in a way that just makes sense to people."

It's certainly making sense to lots of people at the moment. Already well established for his tweaked out sets with the likes of Tyrant and Sasha at Fabric, he's really come to the fore this year thanks to a succession of well received productions on labels such as Alternative Route, Big Love and Sabotage, as well as one of the best Essential Mix debuts ever.

Radio One, Mixmag, DJ Magazine and IDJ have all been quick to cite him as one to watch this year - with his first mix cd 'Heretic' set for an autumn release on Sabotage. Forthcoming remixes and projects with the likes of Brancaccio and Aisher, Alex Neri, Nic Fanciulli and Paul Woolford are set to raise his bar even higher.

Yousef:
Yousef is a name synonymous with slick, jackin’, sleazy beats, edged with an aggressive and relentless groove. Yousef has DJ’d all over the world, in places such as Miami, Australia, New York, LA, Sao Paulo, Rio, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, Ibiza, Zurich, Jakarta, Africa, Ireland, most major clubs in every country in Europe and every major UK city.

Drum Bum partners Yousef and Steve Mac found success with their releases “I Like This/The Darkness” on Dysfunktional and “Circus Parade” on Yousef’s label “Carioca.” Other Carioca releases include tracks from Onionz, Blakkat, Tyra as well as selections from Yousef himself and under his Harry Monroe guise. Yousef’s recent remixes include Fatboy Slims “The Joker”, School’s ‘If’ (Virgin), Tim Deluxe’s “Less talk more action” (Underwater), Boris D’Lugosh “Keep Pushing” (Peppermint Jam), Moloko’s “Cannot Contain This”, Phil Weeks “Candela” and Danny S “Talking Dirty.”

Not content to just produce and DJ, Yousef began his own monthly club-night ‘Circus’, held at the Masque Theatre in Liverpool. Attracting the world’s most renowned DJs – including Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Paul Woolford, Sneak, Derrick Carter, Darren Emerson, Lottie, Jon Carter, Groove Armada, Roger Sanchez, Laurent Garnier, and Phil Weeks, Circus is now a 1200 capacity party with a strong and dedicated following from across the UK and beyond. Following it’s first international outing at crobar Miami with Carl Cox, Circus teamed up with long time friends “Chibuku shake shake” and released “circus and chibuku present: Yousef and Krafty Kuts” a mix compilation that captures the spirit of both dancefloors, named as Best Mix Compilation in 2004 by DJ magazine.

Zack Roth:
A DJ with truly eclectic tastes in music, Zack Roth is definitely an up and comer to look out for in the future. Since 2004, he has played at some of New York City's best known clubs, including Sullivan Room, Ikon (formerly Exit), Table 50, Avalon and most recently Love. Zack has spun alongside some of the best known and most respected DJs and Producers in the business, including the likes of_Paolo Mojo, John Graham, Noel Sanger, Thomas Penton, Kai, Madoka, Ashley Caselle, Ben Lost and Jason Jollins._ 2006 is shaping up to be another big year for Zack as he_has taken_up residencies at two of New York’s venues: Love and Avalon. His style of music can be described as progressive, dark, and danceable, as his sets showcase his passion and love for a wide variety of electronic dance music._

Dany Veltri:
Dany Veltri’s style is a thumping blend of electro, trance and progressive house music that ranges from the funky and uplifting to the evil and wicked. After getting hooked on dance music at Detroit’s legendary club Motor, Dany quickly got together with the Groovenauts crew. He has since played alongside such DJs as Ashtrax, Steve Gerrard, Ben Lost, Pole Folder, Second Sun, Noel Sanger, Madoka and Paolo Mojo at venues in New York and DC.

sadly enough, the dumb NYTAs will reply with posts like "sorry, but i dont like avalon", all because of a series of bad nights out that happened, what, like 3 years ago? ill be supporting definitely... i was working there until about a month ago... totally was unaware of these new parties, cos if i were, i woulda stayed, but it seemed like they were going in no direction everytime i was there.... nothing got done, and nothing changed.... like i said, ill be there!

It seems that they're trying to weed out the crackheads by removing a lot of trance from the lineup. Hopefully it'll work out, then they can bring back the trance DJs and have a more diverse musical lineup

hmmm.
my thought was more like, wow someone's giving techno another chance, nice!
b/c for awhile there, there was no techno anywhere, in big rooms i mean

i think if we all put aside our past bad experiences with the venue, it can resurrect itself, providing the opportunities for a more diverse musical lineup

the venue does seem to be re-committing itself to the MUSIC
which can't be a bad thing
