Standard Clubbing Music

I'm trying to become a DJ in one of the local clubs in DC or anywhere on the East Coast.
The problem is that there's a big difference between the kind of music discussed on these forums and the music that actually gets played in American clubs and fills the dancefloors.
Even when I go to Glow, which is supposed to be a Trance event, I don't hear a lot of Trance a la Armin or whatever. The "standard clubbing music" I hear is edgier, harder, perhaps more housy.
I mean, how would you describe the music that normally gets played in the Main Arena @ Fur? If I am to put together a demo mix that will impress a few club managers, what tracks do I need to include? |

| Make House/Progressive demos. Like here in New York, Trance is nothing. Only when they bring the big guys in. I play Trance/Prog mostly, but I have to make Prog House/Progressive demos to get some kind of gig here. |

not to be harsh, but my first thought is:
if you don't know what kind of music is played and what people like to hear, maybe you're not ready to get gigs? |

What he said I guess hehe. A track I may say might not be to your liking but would be to me. So posting a list of tracks that appeal to me buy maybe not to you would be a waste of time. I guess check on audiojelly.com and listen through some prog tracks and/or check dancerecords.com if you're going to buy some rekkids. :-) |

I didn't say I was ready to get gigs. I said I wanted to learn about this "standard clubbing style" whatever it is. And it's certainly not Trance, so I can't learn on this forum. |

gotcha. This is a good place to talk about it.
I think the djing is extremely difficult. I've been DJ (given charge of the music) at several family events.
Anyways, I always find it difficult to make everyone happy. They just want to listen to the same tracks played at every party. As soon as I put in something different, that I KNOW they are going to like, the dance floor clears out. Sometimes I've had to pander to them and play the same song at least four times in one night and they love every minute of it. |

I've already done that and given out demo CDs to some clubs. Nobody liked my different "style" of music.
Club managers are not idiots, they want music that will do well with the crowd. |

I smell ya one this one.
I too play some of the more harder/techier side of trance.
Its been very difficult for me to locate gigs in and our DC because of that.
The stigma of trance in general will get you denied by just using the word.
So dont let the public tell you any different. Stick to what you like and what your passion is.
Making demos based on something that your really not wont get you anywhere..IMO
If youre not spinnin what you truly love...then why spinn at all????
If you wanted play by request....just become a rent-a-dj....Theyll tell you exactly what to spinnn.
Also people hate change....House rules in the States....So it will be a while before the purists phase out...and something else takes over....Im not dissing anyone....just saying to BE PATIENCE.
Who knows what will be next....it may be what youre playing now....who knows????
Talk to Dj ECO if youre in the NYC area...hes been making big moves for the NYC tech/hard trance fans. |
