hmmm poly. is there a lot to do in the area? how do you keep yourselves busy/have fun? cause i went there the other day, and it just seemed kinda quite and rural-ish. are there a lot of clubs and cool organizations i might wanna join? how is the community life? sorry for more questions, but i need to decide by monday @_@

thanks for opinions thus far.

the school itself is rural cuz of their infatuation with cows and horses :conf:

but the surrounding community is nice. i live like 5 min from poly in walnut. the area is clean though not much to do but chill. but beats the congestion in la. youre 20 min from disneyland, 30 min from the mtns , and 30 min from the OC beaches, just to give you an idea.

UCLA baby!

JC then transfer!

go to ucsb. best location...right on the beach. ranked in the top 10 party schools in playboy magazine. only 100 miles away from hollywood. great place to be if you are into outdoor sports such as mountain biking, running, surfing, etc. ucsb has had the most nobel laureates out of any other schools in recent years. ucsb is a perfect place whether you are into partying or not and theres a lot to do.

I didn't hear too much about the "computer science/engineering, industrial design, or something involving architecture" program at UCSB. My vote would also go to Cal Poly for this, but you should seriouslly checkout the campus, I was in shock when I saw a duck crossing near the administration building. I currently go to CSULB and I know our engineering and computer science is great, but no where near Poly, also our industrial design program is EXTREMELY good in aeronautics field because Boeing is one of our major contributors to the program since they have a branch in long beach. Poly for sure has a much much better architecture program (their administration building is a marvel!) UC Riverside I heard their business program is good, but taken from one of my friends who lives there "I hate smelling cow manure when I wake up." UC R is pretty much in the middle of no where, I personally would like it because Palm Springs is pretty close, and I love mountaineering, but thats about it. Cal Poly is closer to civilization, its in a good location where you can get to almost all the hot spots in SoCal in about equal time (2hrs of traffic). CSULB is a school at the border of orange county and LA county, they area is a very large collegetown, beach is close by (I have to warn you though, our "long beach" is still polluted after weekly beach cleanups), you can always go south to all of orange county beaches and san diego county beaches which are probably some of the best if not the best in california. Our party scene is good, but has nothing on UCSB, its an extremely racially diverse campus too, 36,000 people 2nd only behind ucla. I am Marine Biology and Applied Math double major, both are great programs at CSULB. UCSB is probably the nicest campus in california, it is on a very nice beach, and I heard the marine biology program up there is great too, but on the stuff you are doing I havent heard anything. I would seriouslly checkout each campus. If you need a tour of CSULB, just let me know :)

Thats exactly why I didn't go to UCSB. I never would have walked. I'm not disciplined enough. That and I didn't want roommates and couldn't afford to live in SB by myself.

UCR isn't in the middle of no where! It is right next to the GHETTO!!! I am talking about motels with signs that say "Color tv" or "We have hourly rates!".

Why You Should Choose UCSB
Academic Research

* UCSB has one of the top research programs in Computer Science, ranked #21 in federal funding for academic research. Here are the most recent statistics from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

* Newsweek Magazine named UCSB as one of America's 25 Hot Schools (2005). Here is what they said about UCSB:
"If there's a more beautiful campus than this one at the edge of the Pacific, we haven't seen it. For many students, that would seal the deal, but UCSB also boasts Nobel Prize winners on its faculty, top research centers in science and technology and an extensive study-abroad program. The number of applicants has doubled in the past decade, with 36,651 applying for admission to the class of 2008 (19,325 were accepted). Aside from the top academics, a big draw for many is the variety of recreation. The campus has its own beaches where students can surf, and the Big Bear ski resort is just a few hours' drive away."

* U.S. News and World Report ranks UCSB #34 in top Computer Science programs (2006), and #21 in top engineering schools (2005). Our ranking of #34 is an improvement of 15 points higher than our ranking in 2002, representing the biggest jump of any school in the rankings.

* U.S. News and World Report 's guide, "America's Best Colleges" named UCSB as the 13th best public university, and ranked #45 in its list of top US universities.

* Shanghai Jiaotong University's Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks UCSB as #34 in the world, and #26 in the USA. See the full list here.

* UCSB is home to ten national centers and institutes, including seven that are sponsored by NSF.

* The computer science PhD program has produced stellar graduates now employed as faculty and researchers in top universities and prestigious industrial laboratories around the world. Here is a brief sampling of some of them:
UCLA, Cisco, Boeing, Cornell, Microsoft, Google, Virginia Tech, Carnegia Mellon University, Oracle, Mount Holyoke, Case Western Reserve, MIT Lincoln Labs, Inktomi, Yahoo, IBM, and others.

Cal Poly Pom, almost went there, but the school smells bad. I mean... it smells like cow pies all the time. I couldn't handle it, simply because of that.
