Tipping

In regards to this thread I would like to ask you all something, or actually I would like to whine about the North American tipping system.
Really, tipping should be to people who does something over the normal, if a waitor at the resturant just gives me average service, I really don't see the reason to tip him/her. Or if someone delivers a pizza to me, then why should I give a tip to them since they are clearly just doing their job which they should be paid for by their employer (ie included in the price)!
But in North America, if you don't tip someone, they will get pissed at you (probably cause their salary suck without tips, but it is still an insane system where you are supposed to give money to someone for something which should really be included in the price). |

| Agree. I only tip when i get above average service. I figure if the person serving me puts a little effort into his work, he deserves a tip. If i get my food or drinks just slammed on the table infront of me and looks at me like its somehow my fault that he has to be working on a saturday night then he isnt getting any. |

It has definitely become somewhat of an entitlement mentality among some, and they are generally the ones who are not tipworthy. However, not tipping is pretty ty, imo. Don't be a cheapskate.
Not that I prefer the American system. It was nice to be in Europe and not have it expected of me, yet still enjoy proper service. |

| i tip if they deserve it. but the waiters, especially, get most of their money from tips, 200+ bucks a day/night for sure. |

some guys you are or will be tipping make more money than you, interesting enough.
only people who really bitch about tipping are broke guys and gals who are the real ones who need to find a job.
seeing as how in NYC most waiters are EXTREMELY helpfull and curtious i have no problem tipping. in Florida this spring break, most waiters i've met over 2 weeks time were who didn't get a tip. the nice ones in Universal's Studios and downtown Palm Beach, obviously did. Got no problem with it.
I'd rather tip than pay "gratuity tax" which is more than the average tip anyway. |

Well, I usually tip alot, more then I should, but I like tipping people. I mean, they live with the tips that they get. Its true that they should do something above average..but it can also help you out in the future.
I went to the hairstylist one day, it was my first time at this particular store, so I didnt know the people that worked there. I mean, you dont want the to screw up your hair. Anyways, I usually tip like 5 bucks for a 15 dollar hair cut..and this time I left about 10 bucks to this lady, just so she could remember me for next time so she can cut my hair better. So it could help you that way as well. |

Ive never noticed this before, if service is really good Ill tip 15% maybe a little more if its exceptional and if its bad I dont tip at all.
I normally pay resteraunt bills by credit card and I dont fill out the tab untill Im leaving so I wouldnt know if the server is mad or not because by the time the read it, Ive already left and honestly I dont care if they are or not.
As for pizza delivery, I only tip if its raining out.
My only exception is at bars, I have a few bartenders I take care of and they return the favor with free drinks and great service. I can not stress this enough, make friends with your bartenders and they will take care of you. |
