generalizing. There are several factors to consider when hosting an event of this nature, for one drugs. As for this "mentality" which you speak of, this event in this municipality is a new one of this nature, therefor the mentality is not similar to just keeping a racetrack opened or a horse track or a casino which is already in existence, the mentaility has to focus on " do we want this type of venue here?" - from their perspective the issue to ponder is do we need this? do we not? do the benefits outweight the negatives?
Keeping in mind of course we (partiers) are essentially using their land and city for our own purposes, renting their place for our party.
Dunno if you could simply reduce this down to a mentality/society issue, this is similar to our garbage situation; we make it then we ship it elsewhere. In this, instead of garbage we are forced to ship our fun elsewhere, but maybe "elsewhere" just doesnt want it....

The mentality is that WEMF was not allowed to return to orangeville because "they scared away the loons".

This was actually a reason cited at a city hall debate afterwards.

How do you live next to a fairgrounds and not expect people to actually use it???

Everyone is a NIMBY and that is my point. And you have backed that point up.

Most people move out of the city because of the noise and traffic. Regardless of what events are held during the day, having music at night is not something these settlers want. Hey, even when you are at a camping site or a trailer park during a long weekend, people complain when there is noise after 12, even though people go to these places a lot of time to socialise.
So maybe it's time to do what Detroit and Miami are doing, and hold this event during the day. Get the whole city of Toronto to support it, and have the local clubs handle the afterhours debauchery. Of course if this is done, then the event will loose its attraction of being an overnight event at a campground. Plus it might take some shine off the Pride parade and Guvernment events.

With Ultra Festival, it's a different shindig than WEMF - WEMF is camping outside and listening to tunes all night whereas festivals like DEMF and Ultra are daytime only, no camping, and usually have club venues doing the after party shindigs.

One of the main three reasons I would go to WEMF would be to camp outside with friends and dance to tunes till the wee hours with it. another city bound festival - got enough of these.

If Burning Man were closer to the Mid-West, I'd be their flyerbitch since I was 16. ;)

I am already being kidnapped to the BM this year if all goes well. Gotta love RV-travelling hippies with determination, speed, clever tongues, and extra tickets - they have ways of making you go.

I'll be in Los Angeles for that month so I'm thinking of driving out and hitting it up for 3 or 4 days as well. :)

I heard that wemf is going to move to doing daytime stages this year rather than go through the night.

I think that is absolute balls.

Not cool at all...it's all about wandering through the tents and dancing at random DJ stands during the day, than partying with the WEMF DJs at night :( This sucks.
