Hope you're all having a great time @ Crobar. Just got done with another show so didn't make it, but enjoy the "furry" sounds and hopefully see you @ Spy Bar tomorrow! Techno, minimal, progressive & trance, this is one diverse weekend!
(This is my first non-drunk post @ this hour in a long time) |

good times...
I'm just flabbergasted by the setup Richie had...
3 laptops!!! 1 G4 Powerbook sporting Ableton for what looked like EFX, 1 G4 Powerbook that had some sort of audio meters on the screen and he kept that one partially closed and a new black MacBook running Serato Scratch Live. He ALSO had some crazy ass touch screen efx box/midi controller that I have no clue what it is but if I seen a photo of it I would know... and his custom built Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixer.
When we arrived to Crobar, there was hardly a line but noticed after someone mentioned, Richie was standing right there with us. They wouldn't let him in!!! The people @ Crobar have no ing clue... unbelievable. So finally the people from Pure came and got him in after yelling at the door people that he IS the reason everyone was there tonight... lol
Magda is very good at what she does and she is strikingly beautiful! She was using a Sony Vaio with Scratch Live as well. Seems everyone is making the switch from Stanton for some reason... hmmm.
It was extremely minimal from 11 to 2:15 up to when Richie came on and he definitely picked up the pace... but by that time me and my crew were kind of spent and only stayed for about 30 minutes after he came on. I really wished it was a Saturday night so we could stay longer and had more people there for him.
great to see the usualy suspects _minus Yuris and Andy.... ahahahahhaha, pun intended :) |

he was probably using a lemur (midi controller) there like $5000
he probably didnt have to pay a dime for it.
i showed up late and only liked about 2 tracks from the time i showed up until the time i left.
good to see everyone though. |

Overall, music-wise, I wasn't like, dazzled by anything. Maybe a couple of tracks. I guess I like less-loungy and more energy. The fact that my eyes were burning for most of the time I was there didn't help. Also, still having a fresh memory of the Nic Fanciulli show doesn't help either :) Yeah it's just gonna be hard for any show to "top" that, for me.... On top of this, I just wasn't feeling any "vibe". There was a BIG vibe at Spybar for Nic. It was amazing.
Spoke w/ Richie Hawtin for a bit before the show, he was up by the lounge. Very cool guy, easily approachable and easy to talk to. Props for that.
Crobar security was annoying me. Beginning with the debaucle while in line - i.e. giving Hawtin trouble @ the door - it's clear they have no clue.
There was so much damn smoke in the place. And, it was the BAD kind. The kind that makes your eyes burn and leaves the ing nastiest smell on you and your clothes. Sure this is normal for clubs - until March '07 at least :) - but damn this was f'in NASTY.
I like writing good reviews but damn, this was not a good night for me. :< |

| the problem with minimal is that none of the tracks are memorable. peoples reactions in this thread only prove my point. i dont have anything against the genre, hell i write minimal, but as far as trends go its going to burn out really fast. all its going to take is another bedrock - emerald and everyone will be writing/playing melodic progressive again. |

wow you hit the nail on the head Blake - that's exactly it. You know what another thing about last night is.. the location. Minimal @ Crobar. It's like a f'ing paradox. One of my most memorable nights @ Crobar? Mid-late 90's. Drunk. And losing my mind to "Energy Flash" by Beltram, with Psycho Bitch on the decks. THAT WAS THE ... Crobar was classically a place you went when you wanted to dance your ass off. Not where you chill out to minimal. I think that was a big factor for me last night. Also - WMC 2003 @ Crobar Miami - another one of my most unforgettable club nights - Monday w/ David Morales at the decks. GOD what a vibe. I think that's my #1 club experience, ever. I know music has changed in ways since then, but has it? Morales' style has remained pretty consistent over the years, going back to the 80's. Right now, it seems like a second coming of that kind music! I don't want to name any genres because I am not quite sure what to call it. So yeah - it's past experiences that have molded my current ones - and I can't help but reminisce. |

Yeah, I can definitely agree with that. My gripe with minimal that it wasn't music that could inspire, it wasn't music that could change your moods and it wasn't music that would make you pause and go "whoa, did I just hear that?". To me, it always seemed to be relegated to ambient background noise.
me and Andy have been jokingly referring to it as "cellphone music" for quite some time now. |
