I didn't bother to read this thread through (sorry, but this also reflects the way I usually browse this forum).
It's probably because we have such an unusually well-maintained and clearly structured forum in Finland (check out: http://www.klubitus.org/forum.php) that I get frustrated every time I come to this site.
One of the many great things on this klubitus forum is that everything is linked: discussion threads, profiles, event details, photos, music and even blogs. You can easily check out what your friends have been posting recently, the pictures of them that exist in the galleries, their blogs, and the parties they have marked in their calendar. So you know who's gonna be at the same party as yourself, and you can search for photos of each user from all the photo archives.
On top of that, the frames and overall design make it easy and fun to use. Not to mention that the overall quality of the conversation is also better than in the majority of TA threads, no offence ;)

To summarize: it's not your fault TS is boring, it simply doesn't make it easy and fun for the users to maintain real conversations. Also it's a pain to manually gather a list of people that have said they will attend some party or another. In fact, from many of the threads it's hard to tell where or when exactly the party even takes place!

Maybe we can build a real conversation about this?

OT: I'll be in NYC from 5/25 to 6/3 and looking for some live action :p

I've been a member of dozens of forums since 2000 and TA has come up on top as one of the most solid and easy to use forums I've ever had the pleasure of posting on. Plenty of "real" conversations have been had and we're all having fun. I'm not sure where you're getting off saying stuff like that. Wait... yes I do. Read on to the end and you'll understand.

It is usually the case that when a roll-call thread is made, the original poster will go through the entire thread and edit his first post to let everyone know the entire list of people going. I don't think it's a pain. Simply a few clicks here, a few button presses there and everyone is in the know. Plus, many of us are fairly close with one another so we know who'll be going to an event, beforehand.

If you were to frequent the clubs and the areas around it, everything about them would become commonplace. The promoters seem pretty clear in the threads that they make so I'm not sure how you could get confused about something like that unless you were from out of town, in which case the promotion isn't tailored for you. However, if you interact with other TAs or use Google, you would confused no longer.

How can you get off saying something like this when you straight out tell us, in the first line of your post that:

Not until you read through the entirety of this thread.

First of all, thanks for the comments! I was happy to see someone took the opportunity to share their thoughts on this.

Good to hear that you are enjoying the forum, but I shall read to the end before commenting...

If this works for you, fine. I am familiar with the roll-call system you have, but still it is upto the person who started the thread to edit the names and add people to the list. I was just letting you know that there are ways to make this even easier for the users. If the majority of people here think the current system is working fine, then there is no need to change it. But again, I'm glad someone expressed their opinion on this.

You're right, the threads started by promoters usually have a flyer or info about the event on their first post. One thing that can make finding these event posts challenging is that there are no separate sections in the forum for future and past parties and other discussion threads. As there are not so many active threads at any given time the events are usually easy to find. I suppose TA NY is maintained and actively followed by a small bunch of people, so there is probably not much incentive to make it more structured. If you guys think it's working fine as it is, forget what I'm saying and go have fun with it! :) I'm merely comparing my observations of about a year of semi-active TA browsing to few years on the Finnish forum of thousands of users, which works much better for me.

What I mean is that in most cases after reading some of the first and last posts I claim to have a pretty good idea of what the thread is about. Do you always read though the entire thread before replying? If you do, I think this tells that each thread here is pretty short-lived and soon forgotten by everyone. This doesn't mean they are not interesting or important, but that there are not so many threads where lengthy discussions would be maintained.

When you ask so nicely, I must do this next.

Oh and please do enlighten us on your definition of what a "real conversation" is.

The term may be provocative, but what I mean is that a "real conversation" involves critical thinking, clearly stated and well-founded opinions on a chosen topic (e.g., politics, relationships, music, etc.). Probably should have said "serious" instead of "real", but discussion doesn't have to be boringly serious even when the topic is e.g., politics. This would be contrasted by topics discussing future parties and other fun stuff, which are meant for people to express their feelings and anticipation for the event. I wouldn't expect to encounter "real" conversation as defined above in those posts.

As a final note, I did not come up with the idea that TA can be seen as boring, it's the topic after all ;) And I do know this is not (or at least did not start out as) a serious thread about how to improve the forum. I'm merely offering my humble opinion on the possible causes for your boredom, and even cures, but if you feel it's unnecessary, please feel free to ignore what I'm saying.

cheers!
