He seemed to deal with it fine, he said it was pop but he never said pop was bad.

ok nevermind he just said "it isn't good music" right as I was typing this friggin post, argh.

You gotta think of these things in relative terms, sure armin isn't on clearchanel, but that sound he has is so dominant that it is easily considered as the pop of EDM. I have no problem admitting that I enjoy some of the tunes because they make a good subsititue for top40 pop music, it really isnt that big of a deal to like some pop. I mean it shouldn't be such an insult to desire to be part of a crowd, crowds of people enjoying each other's company in the presence of popular music is fun. So enjoy pop music all you want in spite of the people who bitch about it!

When people say that it is pop, you aren't supposed to feel insulted, you're supposed to say "so what?"

I for one fell in love with the snare rolls and trance structure in 2000/2001, even though most people found it stale by 1999, it was pop, melodies, supersaws, anthems, formulas, but it didnt matter because I could turn on digitally imported all day and just take my mind to another world, what other people think about it.

theres nothing wrong with clean, catchy pop. but when its insluting your intelligence and trying to come off as a serious song or trying to be more than what it is...its . Shiver is just that.

Of course you can call tracks like Shivers, Love Comes Again, Burned With Desire, Without You Near, Dogzilla - Without You ... pop. And I totally agree on that.
And yes; Armin (and in lesser extend Tiësto) plays these tunes...

But that doesn't make their whole set pop-like. LIke I said; its only a very marginal minority of the set; and they're just crowd-pleasers. So none of these dj's "only spins pop". Face it ;)

there you go, how easy was that?

as far as shivers is concerned (to tell you the truth I have never heard the tune before) you(of all people, the guy with a pic of a jesus pose in his sig) have no way of knowing if it is "trying to come off as a serious song" or "trying to be more than what it is". Armin is a humble guy who has admitted several times that he makes poppy music, the people who present the tune as anythingelse aren't the creator, so it is quite unfair to say that armin's tunes are trying to be something that they arent.

I find that he quite bluntly admits the people he tries to apeal to with his music and in no way tries to pawn it off as something more serious than it really is.

nothing. Im just saying its ...and its dominating the market. if youre content with that then by all means indulge yourself. just dont get upset when people comment on how it is.

usually when something is trying hard to come off as something ist not you can tell. Shivers is trying its nuts off to be an anthem and it fails miserably.

That is a fundamental disagreement we can never solve, I beleive that sound carries no inherent meanings and gives no clues for intentions, that all interpretations of sound arise from the context that the sound is used in. Your interperetation is cultural, and depends on your perspective, there is nothing in a tune that ever indicates what it is trying to be(except words). That is my way of viewing music.

Music can't insult your intelligence, it can only shake air. You can't expect cultural interperetations of a sound to be universal over a style of music which is enjoyed by different people from all over the planet.
