[Lame Review] Tiesto in San Francisco (May 26, Night 1)

Just going to sum it up in a few lines.

Opener: Syd Gris...was outside most of the time but he was quality once again!

Tiesto: Came on at midnight

12am-1am -- Wreck, wreck, lame transition, horrible EQs (for REAL people)....

1am - 2am -- OK...OK, get good. EQs good. Good transitions. Can't exactly call any wrecks. Solid hour.

2am - 3:15am -- I thought his trackselection this out was pretty darn good but had a few rough spots in there with the transitins and EQs.

His EQs were just completely whack most of the night. You would notice it during transitions where it was like he was overpowering the song currently playing trying to do the transition.

He also had this little issue where to get a temp he likes he'd wait for a transition to finish and then just hamer the tempo slider up or down. I dunno, it just really stood out to me....bet most people didn't even realized it. :p

Now I do not know if this is true as I was outside at the end of Tiesto's set, but someone said his power got cut off? Not sure if that's why he stopped or not...I don't think so....but just heard that.

One thing I will say is that Tiesto looked TOTALLY into his set and was really enjoying himself, dancing a lot, trying to work the records, etc...and I almost wonder if this hurts him a little. Last few times he's played in SF where I thought he played some GREAT sets he was like PvD....very concentrated. Didn't really pay attention to all the groupies trying to attack him. Just would do head nobs, pump his arm up, and maybe do a little jumping now and then...but that was it. It was like one ear always in the headphone and him working on getting that next tried cued up nicely....ok, enough babbling.

To sum up his performance, I think it was OK. He played some awesome tracks and personally I am one to forgive wrecks and rough transitions if the programming is good and makes up for it, but there was just no explosiveness to his set. It never really seemed to build up to a peak. More interestingly, he didn't really play a lot of his classics. He played Suburban train (or maybe it was just Urban train?) mashed up with I believe "Hidden Logic presents Luminary - Wasting" -- it was interesting. He played Love Comes Again (PUKE) if you call that a classic (which I hope not).

3:15 - Close: Syd Gris comes back on. Playing some good stuff. Decide to walk to Jack in the Box at like 3:30 so Rich can get some grub...when he's done, head back to Ruby mainly just to say goodbye to peeps and stuff...is like 4:00...end up listening to Syd Gris finish up his set which was at around 4:30. Playing some great stuff...a real rough transition in there, though...but he realized it.:p

-------------------

The crowd: Nothing against them, but that was by far the most Asians I have EVER seen at Ruby Skye. In the VIP area upstairs, 90+% of the peeps were Asian. They were having a good time, though, so props to them! I'm not one to point anything "Asian" out in the open usually, since I really think that they get a bad wrap in a lot of ways, but there were A TON. :p

The Snobs: With tons of experience of Ruby Skye's notorious crowds of the past I feared they'd come out in force tonight...and well, they did. Took a few peeks at the main floor crowd and knew I just didn't even want to try to infiltrate. Just stayed back, enjoyed the music, talk to quite a few friends who I ran into...only ran into ONE TA (other than Rich) and that was Jason (ninetyninej). The one thing I knew what would happen which completely gave away the crowd type. 1) At 2am after last call was done, was outside and tons of peeps left. Round one of Snobs gone. And 2) right when Tiesto finished, the second huge exodus occured. Luckily plenty of people still stayed around to fill the floors (both downstairs and upstaris) to hear Syd Gris play a great closing set.

I was disappointed with Tiesto's set...

It's 6am... I will elaborate more when I wake up.

PVD > Tiesto

i was tired, hungry and physically exhausted going into the club so i knew it was gonna be a long night before it even started. inside the place was packed, looked like more people were rollin than not and the music was well, boring. i ended up spending almost half the time outside mingling, and eating. being tired, sober and only hearing about half his set probably affected my experience, but i don't think i missed anything special because of it. actually from what i heard of it, syd gris' closing set was better than tiestos. in fact i've heard many local openers/closers play better sets than that. hey at least i finally met ninetyninej :)

so here are my pics from the night...

Tiesto concentrates and hes good
Tiesto interacts with the crowd, and he sacrifices performance

Zabiela/SanderK/E.Haliwell interact/concentrate/throw down anything they damn well please and i think personally rock the party 100times better than Tiesto.......but Tiesto's shadow rules all.....

tis wat i dont get people.......

90% of the consumers in any market are lazy, ignorant shoppers who go after the ubiquitous brand name over the esoteric quality alternatives. edm/trance/club world is no different. so you have that crowd, then you have the show up to be seen club crowd, then you have the tiesto nostalgia crowd. mix them all together and you have last night.

i dunno who it was that said it recently but they were so right....i think it was MissJ.....only 25% of the crowd honestly goes 4 the music and atmosphere....the rest of the in crowd is there 2 just in fill up space, and Whirlpool and Maytag all over the place....wutever this issue isnt worth getting in2, im personally not bashing Tiesto i think hes an excellent PERFORMER and ARTIST but not the best DJ ive seen.....(which is what hes getting all the praise for).....Zabiela is my idea of a DJ, Picotto is a DJ, not in Tiesto.....PIG

I was wondering if DaveT would write: I just stood there stage right staring motionless the whole time :p Now I know he was analyzing!

Anyway, Ruby Skye: nice venue, cool visuals, especially the multi-color laser :eyes: Tiesto seemed impressed with the giant red namesake (vanity? ) neon sign they unveiled behind him. Not sure that they deserve their award for best US club sound system though...

Got there just before 11 (after the fireworks) and the line was only 1 or 2 minutes long :disbelief plus they let you go in and out, and there's food across the street :D Cool door staff too :)

The place was packed and the crowd one of the worst I've ever seen at a club. During the opening set, one girl jumped on the stage and crashed into the decks... At the end of Tiesto's set, some guy climbed on (uninvited) to shake hands with him (which he did). In the last hour or two, several girls were hand picked from the front row to go back stage, where there was quite a crowd. I saw some fights almost erupt in the front too...

No acrobats this time; just some costumed stage dancers, who were... OK at best.

I don't know that I would be as harsh as Dave about the technical performance. I would say it was pretty similar to San Diego.

He played all the usual tracks from ISOS 5, but not the same classics as he did in SoCal. Instead, a bunch of more obscure tunes, one of which was really good, and might be a new production of his...

In lieu of an encore, he brought the last track to a crawl and restarted it. He did take quite some time to pose and talk with all the fans on stage at the end before he left.

The opening DJ (Sid Gris) reminded me of Boris MD.... enough said! He did better closing though, with tunes like Aven - All I Wanna Do :gsmile:

Last night was probably another case of rehearsal for the bigger night (i.e. today) though, so I think that those going today instead made the smart choice ;) Verdict tomorrow...

I chose to go last night because I just KNOW the crowd tonight is going to be even far more snobbish than last night. Welcome to Saturday nights in San Francisco.

And one of the worst crowds you ever experienced...yep, Ruby Skye can be horridly bad that way...but Avalon is still much worse, lol.

And sorry, that was technically the WORST I have ever heard from him personally. I dunno, maybe I'm just the only one that would hear the next tracking coming in at 20gb louder than the track he was transitioning from...or should I say, he'd juice up the bass to be way loud and once the track got going tone it back down. ANd his transitions were way harsh. Not necessarily mis-beatmatching, just cueing tracks at the wrong time.

I mean, his awesome Heineken Music Hall set from December suffered from the same issues but the whole set was just awesome so those issues cold be largely overlooked. But last night his set just didn't have a peak; a memorable part, IMO....so all the issues just continue to stand out.

And I wasn't just standing there stage right the whole night. I was all over the place. Along the bar on the right side, along the bar on the left side. in the middle. in the back. upstairs along the back of the balcony. In the VIP area. Outside. Everywhere. Ask Rich, he was with me. :p I was pretty tired last night so not jumping around like a crazy idiot when good tracks came on. If you see me when I'm in top form, I'm a bit ludicrous. :-p

OK, OK, you do make some good points :) I did notice the tricks you mention, and yes, he had several really rough transitions and few awesome ones.

One thing that I forgot to mention too is that the set wasn't going anywhere, unlike at Mansion for example, where there was a clear structure. So I will say this again: Tiësto does better the longer he plays (opposite of Ferry); and I think the difference lies between 3- and 4+ hours. I'm betting he will go on longer (and be better) tonight ;)

pics, vids, and review later...getting ready to leave for part2

PS. it was great to see you again dave and great to finally meet you rich -- depending on how i am tomorrow i might see you guys at eddie halliwell:)

Tracklisting was good towards the 2nd half, but I felt the set was missing something. I heard a lot of tracks I haven't heard before which was nice. Didn't hear Adagio or Just be which is also a plus. Good thing I left before Love Comes Again. The lighting and everything was a nice touch. The sound was ok. I noticed the sound quality is much better on the dance floor than upstairs. One thing I really hated was the amount of cracked out Fobs that kept on bumping into me all night. Argh:mad:
