Who is the worst No 1 AFL draft pick in the last 10 years (pg. 3)
View this Thread in Original format

No one gave a flying tewt about drafting prior to 2001 ( Hodge, Ball Judd )... Yet now there are people who put their hopes and expectations on these number 1 picks to be the next superstar.

Drafts with heaps of depth happen once a blue m00n - besides, there are always sides who will draft players who fit their requirements as a team and not pick the best possible player in the draft... Therefore going on about number 1 picks is quite...... thilly : /

kthxbi ^_______-

yeah hawthorn went after roughead and franklin because they needed key position players and good ones are like needles in a haystack but roughead was not necessarily worthy of the 2nd pick overall.

you will see how worthy he really is in the coming years..those guns were made for marking, and thats just what they'll do!

2004 - Brett Deledio (Richmond)
2005 - Marc Murphy (Carlton)

It's a shame that Waterhouse doesn't quite count because that would make the decision easy. Goddard or Gardiner would have to be the most disappointing from that lot imho.

i think of that list it would really have to be headland in the last 10 years... Gardiner was pretty awesome for a few years and Goddard and Fraser are really starting to do well this year. Headland had a great year in 2002(?) but since moving to Freo has done nothing, pretty dissapointing to peak when you are about 22 then do nothing for the next 4 years.

Still to early to tell about the last 3 picks.

while talking about #1 picks however what about Hird and Chris Grant? probably both in the top 10 best players in the 90s and both were picked outside the top 60! Hird was picked at 73 if i recall correctly...
Teflon_Teapot
that is the same with some recent players, simon black and nick dal santo were not high draft picks either.

yeah, theres always a few that get picked out of the top 30 or more who turn into stars (or at least better than a lot in front of them).

Off the top of my head two NAB rising stars this year Danyle Pearce and Brad Symes were late picks.

Kane Cornes was pick about 30.

Dane Swan was around 60ish, so was Cameron Bruce.

ok i got one: who is the worst draft pick of all time? i vote shaun mcmanus.
Trance Nutter
Rhyce Shaw

I'd say he was the worst AFL player who had a regular spot in the team, especially about 2 years ago

kane cornes was picked under father-son so was chad cornes.

nay, Graham Cornes had absolutely nothing, NOTHING, to do with Port Adelaide. He hates Port Adelaide, he consistently makes that very very clear on his radio show.
He coached Adelaide, and Glenelg who he coached and plaed for is aligned with the Crows. Thats whats causing all the hubub about Bryce Gibbs at the moment, he should be father sonned to the Crows (old man played for Glenelg) but his father missed out on qualifying by 5 games or something.

Ebert was picked up as a father son so his late pick doesn't count;)
