Funny, all of the offense taken to my previous post. Yet NONE of you have given any response other than 'I can't believe you're so mean to smokers!'

Here's a question: Why do smokers have such a hard time going outside for the five minutes it takes to smoke a cigarette? Cold? Put a coat on! Raining? Take an umbrella!

I could tolerate smoking rooms, however, why should the waitstaff have to exposed to the CONCENTRATED level of second-hand smoke in smoking rooms? Yes, a number of bars and restaurants post signs that say table service is not available in the smoking room, yet smokers regularly complain about the lack of service and most restaurants have given up on it.

As for the 'It's a free country' argument, since when is smoking a right? I don't see it on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms anywhere. In fact, just the opposite, the government has the right to ban smoking because of the significant public interest in doing so.

I would be much more tolerant of smokers if their noxious cloud would simply surround them. Unfortunately cigarette smoke doesn't behave that way. Why should non-smokers have to leave a restaurant or bar because of the toxic haze?

Finally, to address the fact that their are othe toxins in the air when I go outside. I have recourse against companies that produce them. It's a pretty significant fine if a factory produces a noxious odor outside the premises. Same with airborne pollutants. Would smokers rather be fined heavily for the localized pollution they create. We're just asking you to go outside - it isn't hard!

You still havnt answered my question. If there are designated smoking rooms, and you never ever have to enter them, then why do you care??

As for taking outside, they are already working on banning that next.

I dont disagree with you about non smokers not being forced to breathe smoke. But smoking rooms have allowed for that. Granted, i do believe that entertainment establishments over the age of 19 are not essential services and thus should be allowed to make the choice themselves. However smoking rooms were somewhat of a comprimise. Now that choice has also been taken away.

I really hope i never see you on here bitching about laws and restrictions over things you enjoy. Thats all i can say.

Yeah, yesterday somebody was yelling at my dad about that as he was making a delivery (he's a courier), so my dad quite unkindly told the guy to off. It's his OWN vehicle, not company owned.

I cant believe someone would even have the balls to say that to your dad. Whats next? Are we going to yell at fat people everytime they eat something??

Sheesh!

if they let people vote around the whole province im pretty sure more than 50% of people would not care about people smoking in designated rooms while other half would be for/against it

As a light smoker during the week and heavy smoker whilst socialising, the new law bugs me. I totally understand pushing smoking outside, as London did some 3 years ago. But banning it on patios is problematic. Non smokers have the whole club/bar to themselves....now they want everybody to not smoke. In the open air, that sould be fair game. I"m a courteous smoker...I do not blow it in people's faces or smoke around people who don't like it.

I haven't been out to a bar or club since it came in, but several of my favourite places have half enclosed patios so I"m not sure how this is going to work.

good letter, good message. I applaud Jayx (a first) for understanding that as a non smoker this issue still affects you, because anyone with half a nut in their head will know THAT THIS WILL NOT STOP HERE.

Non smokers are far more petty and bored, than smokers are, and while smokers are chilling out, having a butt non smokers will sit around and find a way to reduce harmful cigarette smoke, all while polluting the world with their noise. They are dull, paranoid maniacs who think on a daily basis of all the ways that the world is killing them.

What this letter tells me is that unfortunatley Non-smokers, ironically are going to have to lead the charge against this stalin-esk ban against the black cloud. Smoking has been around since for centuries, only now we are so smart that we have other people to tell us what to do.

The laws are horse.

I hope to god that some chain smoking lawyer gets handed a ticket, for enjoying his smoke, only to find out that he is breaking the law for smoking in the same place he has for years....and he decides to fight this.

Cigarettes are killers, though. There is no point arguing that and while the government is very hypocritical by raking in huge tax dollars on smokers, all the while trying to lead the anti smoking charge, I still think we slowly need to try to eliminate smoking in the next generation or two. I know that one day, I will give quitting a go, but I know there's not much point right now. As soon as I get that first beer in me, or I stress out about something, I'll be lighting up.

One thing I don't understand is banning smoking even in private clubs. I know the legions are really pissed about this. What if clubs voted on the smoking issue and, for instance, it ended up being 70% in favour of allowing smoking rooms? Too bad...Ontario says no way.

Anyway, this is as far as the law should go. In open spaces outside (sidewalks, patios at bars, etc)...you can't start telling people they can't smoke. the smoke dissipates so fast...honestly, it's no worse than sucking in those city bus fumes on a hot day.

But you do know they are talking about banning it outdoors now too right? Dont think this is the end of it.

I would figure that as a good fiscal conservative Jayx, you'd have a problem with smoking rooms as well.

My problem with smoking rooms is that I don't want to be paying the workers comp and long-term disability tab when the waitstaff that has to go into the smoking lounge winds up getting sick from that kind of working environment. Despite claims to the contrary from bar and restaurant owners, ventilation in smoking rooms is usually very poor - worse than if the smoking was taking place in the main area of the establishment.

As for the comment that 'non-smokers already have the whole club'... So what!?! Are we banning smokers from clubs? No! We're asking you to go outside for the five minutes it takes to smoke a cigarette. then come back in - no problem! I don't understand those people who can't have a good time without cigarettes when they go out. I sense they have bigger problems than just cigarettes.

I'm not sure I follow.. Is it the noxious odor of the cigarette that bothers you, or the toxins? Because, on par with how many toxins are produced through a smoked pack of cigarettes, there are allready heavy taxes as soon as that pack is purchased...
Out of the cost of a cigaretter, half is tax, then on top of that GST and PST are paid... I'd say smokers are currently being fined heavily

a good fiscal conservative would say "let them smoke themselves silly and privatize health care so that I dont have to pay for it"

By saying that the only reason you care about smoking is because you dont want to pay someone's health bills you have acheived two things.

1) you have opened the door to further government behaviour modification. YOu could use this arguement to ban junk food, high risk sports, the list could go on forever.

2) you have just made a very sound arguement for private helathcare. If the price of social medicine is having big brother watch over you, im not willing to pay that price. Thanks anyways.
