Need a few suggestions for my first live gig setlist

Hey everybody. In a few months, I'm going to be doing my first ever live DJing performance. I'm going to be playing a 3-hour trance set for one of the school dances this coming year.

I've been working on the setlist, but it has a couple of holes in it. I originally had tracks where the holes now are, but I've removed them because the transitions were awkward. If anyone can suggest any songs in compatible keys and in the bpm range I need to fill the holes, that'd be awesome, because I can't find anything that fits in my relatively small collection.

Here's what I've got so far:

quote:
6a Sasha - Xpander (Extended Version)
HOLE 1: 128bpm -> X -> 132bpm
I believe a 1a or 8a keycode track would work here.

1a Above and Beyond & Andy Moor - Air For Life
1a Three Drives on Vinyl - Greece 2000
8a Thrillseekers - Dreaming of You (Flutlicht Remix)
9a Andy Moor - Halcyon
9a Lost Tribe - Gamemaster 2003
9a Way Out West - Killa (Orkidea Remix)
9a Armin van Buuren feat. Ray Wilson - Yet Another Day (Original Mix)
HOLE 2: 133bpm -> X -> 140bpm
I believe a 4a or 10a keycode track would work here.

3a DJ Tiesto - Adagio For Strings
3a Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Cafe Del Marco V Remix)
1a Mike Foyle vs Signalrunners - Love Theme Dusk (Mike's Broken Record Mix)
6a Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia 2004 (Pulser Remix)
3a Sonorous - Protonic (Ronki Speed Mix)
8a Simon Patterson - F-16 (Original Mix)
7a Flutlicht - Icarus (Original Daedalus Mix)
7a PPK - Resurrection
6a Atrium - Golden (J'ubio Remix)
6b The Traveller - Believe (Key South Remix)
6a Kid Vicious - Proceed
?? Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes (Armin Van Buuren Remix)
6a microbe - Xit 2 Nowhere (Full Intention Mix)
5a Binary Finary - 1999 (Paul Van Dyk Remix)
?? Astral Projection - Let There Be Light
?? Armin van Buuren - Sail (Carl B's Without Hope Remix)
3a Armin van Buuren - Zocalo (feat. Gabriel & Dresden)

Other than the two marked holes, any other suggestions would be appreciated, although I'm pretty happy with how the rest of it is sounding in Traktor.

Thanks!

haha....a lot of these tracks look like they came straight out of the free tracks on the Tranceaddict website. It's not a bad thing though and the tracklist is pretty decent, however i am questioning how danceable the mix will turnout. sorry i can't help much with tracklisting as music computer is on the other side of the united states. I would also recommend putting tiesto -traffic in their. Sure, it may not be the greatest song but, to unknowing people, it's a great tune.

good on you for doing your best harmonically. but as youre already breaking a few key rules (ie -2, +5, -4) does it really matter if you break rules in those gaps too?

good luck :)

btw, as the rush comes is a 10A :)

Tracklist looks like all really poppy overplayed tracks. Then again I guess a school audience won't even notice.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

I was somehow under the impression that -2 and +5 were legit. Did I do -4? Must have been a mistake, then, because -4 was never on my list of harmonic transitions I thought were correct. Anyway, some of the transitions in here do sound a bit wonky, but not actually sour, so I let them go because I didn't have much else to work with. I may change them in the future.

One possibility for the first gap is Orbital - Nothing Left (Breeder remix). Like a few of the other transitions, it's not perfect, but it doesn't sound bad. Just...a bit weird. So it'll do if I can't find anything better. Similarly, a possibility for the second gap is DJ Tiesto - Traffic. I tried it out while looking at all of my tracks I hadn't tried yet in that bpm range, and it works alright. Do you think anyone would notice if I pitched it up or down one semitone really really slowly over the course of the track, so it could match harmonically at both the beginning and the end? Probably. ;p

Haha, if you've got any suggestions for lesser-known tracks I'd be glad to hear them. I'm just going based on "hm, I like this song" and "hm, mixshare says this song is in this keycode, let's see if it works", not purposely based on any sort of popularity or overplayedness. (Honestly, I don't even listen to enough sets to know that.)

well, as the rush comes => xit to nowhere = a -4 ;)

i dont know a whole lot about music theory, i basically just followed what more learned TAs have said (like nemesis44) in the harmonics sticky. but with keying you can

+1
-1
-3
+4 (sometimes)
+7 (sometimes)

my faves are the -3. yum!

(paraphrasing) a +5 is a key shift or something, so while if you cut the outgoing song you might get a lift in energy, if you play two songs over each other with a +5 shift it wont sound very good. and -2 doesnt work either (as far as i know, i might be wrong).

but the above 5 harmonic choices are what i stick with, coz thats what ive been taught (thanks nem!) and my mixes always sound in key :)

I wish my school dances were this cool. :)

Thank you an enormous amount, now I finally have a definitive guide! I looked through the harmonics sticky, but it's so long that I wound up finding some inaccurate information without seeing a correction, which is why I wound up doing the -2s, the +5s, etc, and wondering why they sounded a bit off...

They'll probably start protesting when they realize I'm not going to play Sandstorm, DJ Sammy, or CRAAAAAZY FROG. :(

You should try browsing the music discussion forum. There's tons of threads there with reccomendations, or go on beatport or audiojelly and do some searches based on the tracks that you already like (for example look at what labels they're signed to, then browse tracks from those labels). Like I said, at a school dance they probably won't notice, but if you play for more sophisticated, more experienced audiences eventually, then you'll need to dig deeper for your music. Besides, it's so satisfying when you find new music on your own that you didn't even know existed. ;)

at the gig, just start playing with a good opener... then work ur way upto other tracks using the crowd as a guide, yes its ur first gig but you'll get a lot more satisfaction played a set on the spot instead of pre-mixing/preparing it. and seeing how this is a high school dance, there wont be many ciritcs, they'll just wanna hear some bangin tunes.

If I continue down the path of DJing, I'll hopefully be able to someday experience the pleasure of improvising sets with no pre-planning. :) For now, though, I'm just satisfied to be able to do transitions without making mistakes.

DJing is sort of a side hobby of mine, anyway. I primarily do music production, (here's my musician myspace if you're interested, no finished trance tracks worth uploading yet but plenty of other stuff) so unless I have a huge sudden change of heart, my expertise will almost definitely always be greater as a writer/producer than as a DJ. That's not to say I don't have a lot of fun doing both, though! :D

Those dont look very danceable to me. I would start with some stuff they are familar with and build their trust and then move to some bangin tunes that are fun to dance to with energy and just build from that. Some popular tones that are danceable
Benny Bennassi - Satisfaction
Rachel Starr - Till there was you (G&D Mix) maybe?
Mylo - Drop the pressure or Mylo vs. Miami Sound Machine - Doctor Pressure
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body (Sander Kleinenbergs Just In The Club Dub) possibly
Underworld - Born Slippy (good closer that everyone knows)
Eurythmics - sweet dreams some mashup or remix (everyone and there mother knows this tune)

These are just ideas Im throwin out. But again I think your list is too poppy and people wont know how to dance to that as well as more house or hard trance type tunes.
