So here's a question for you guys: The definition of "minimal," do you think it's evolved significantly in the last year?
I guess I just see a lot of "tech house" becoming labeled as "minimal," and the word "minimal" being applied to tracks that I'm not so sure I feel actually are really all that minimal... But perhaps I'm very wrong - But minimal to me is Hawtin, Loco Dice, etc. |

Exactly. I hear all these tracks that are called "minimal" and my first thought is "WTF are these kids talking about? There's PLENTY going on in this track!"
:p |

It happens to every fad. Eventually tracks are drifting more and more away from the original concept, until the genre becomes a piss poor image of its former self and dies away slowly.
Again and again and again.. It's nothing new, really. |

I think what they are starting to call this stuff is "micro" esp since some of the most minimal house music is a small but growing genre called "Micro House". You probably have heard of it...sounds like a really experimental tech house, I believe the guy that has been mentioned here "Michael Mayer" mixes "Micro House".. |

| I think minimal is good sometimes but not a set full of it, or if like other people have mentioned, is used to layer two or more tracks and then it could sound like one track. But minimal in and of itself is boring IMO, I just prefered more structured music with a beginning, middle and end, not stuff that seems like it doesn't go anywhere, so I understand what Paul is saying in this interview. I've heard some of Richie Hawtin's stuff and I do like it, but not all of it is really dance music, some is too minimal and experimental, good ideas he had esp with his "Plastikman" guise. It would be cool to use this kind of stuff with audio-visual presentations or in some more avant-garde movies...it's probably already done... |

Yeah, I'm sorry, but most of this 2004+ hipster minimal does indeed suck. It was good in 1993, but this revival crap is gonna be the end of it.
This is exactly what killed psytrance. |

Arnold can the off
Urban Gorilla was by far the best breaks night in the UK, without even nearly as big as names as chew the fat was getting, and was playing minimal as well. Now it does nights called undercover, where it doesn't let anyone know who's playing until they're inside and it's probably now the only night in the UK that can host a night without telling the punters who is playing, and still sell the venue out.
and whats chew the fat doing? oh yeah, all |
