Hallo Leute,
The last days of ETN?
Current mood: sad
Category: Music
The rumors are true. Our stream sponsor is cancelling ALL their Shoutcast stream hosting at the end of June. This is ETN's achilles heel, and the only reason we're high quality, free, and reliable. well, "reliable" being a relative term but in the absence of stream SOURCE problems, anybody anywhere in the world could listen to one of the main servers with no problem.
There's all sorts of ideas being kicked around right now... of course the best thing that could happen would be if we manage to pull some strings or something and keep some servers with the provider somehow. Secondary to that, is if we somehow manage to locate another sponsor for streams or cash to buy reliable streams. The last resort is of course just pulling the plug.
A lot of other options I know, but the leadership of ETN is very clear on 2 points:
1) we don't want to go back to the "old days" of a loose network of unreliable servers around the world. Think back to the ETS Global or even etranceselections days when it was really a pain in the ass to find a good, working server. now multiply that times all the streams and the fact we have about 5 times the listener base of those days.
2) we will not become a subscriber station. It goes against all the principles we've operated under for years and honestly we don't have anybody to administer something like that full time. Paying customers means terms of service, SLAs and deliverables... and I get enough of that crap at work. Rather than have a long, slow slide into oblivion I'd rather just pull the plug while we're popular and keep the option to return someday... like when I win the lottery or something and money stops being an issue ;)
Just so this isn't a completely negative post, it's D-Day so mad respect. Also, I'm prepping the May06 downloads, they'll probably be ready next week.
