Yeah Judo is a Japanese martial art. Mainly throws and takedowns with a little bit of ground work. From the sounds of things you should probably take a look at Jujitsu as well (both Japanese and Brazilian), it may interest you - has a lot more groundwork. I don't know as much about Japanese martial arts, though they seem to attract fewer loonies which is a good thing.
From my experience it's always good to check the master's linneage just as a way to be sure that he is teaching what he claims to be. Martial arts dedicated forums are good places to ask about schools.
This place is a Kung Fu forum but has people that practice BJJ and Judo too whod be able to help you out:

astroboy, which school did you go to? I started doing iwng chun in sydney, then moved over for 2 years chay lay fut. That was 15 years ago though, the school is now a comic book shop :( |
I was at Buk Sing CLF under Sifu Dave Lacey, who now has a school in San Fran. There are a few good clf schools in sydney. Notably Chen Yong Fa's school... he's the descendant of Chan Heung, founder of the style (according to some... there's a bit of an internal dispute about the history of the style now). |

chen yong fa's school was where I went, though as noted that was a long time ago. Was great to go to a very traditional school.
one of the things I regret was not keeping with my training. now I'm 31 and really wish i'd kept it up.
looks like i'll be starting again soon, two friends are professional karate instructors, one keeps hassling me to do something about my weight. I just want to get all the padding on and fight him, get the best view in the house to see how good the pro's are. |

DOn't get me wrong there are deadly techniques out there... One of my favourites: hit teh guy square in the adams apple as hard as you can. If you manage to collapse his trachea he won't last long without medical assistance.
But seriously when you talk to a lot of old Chinese masters their way of explaining accupressure points and Chi are not very mystical at all. |

As a rule anyone out there claiming to teach ninja arts (ninjitsu, taijutsu, whatever they decide to call it) is not only full of BS but also completely looney. There's one guyin Japan whose name escapes me at the moment, but he's the only one who seems close to being legit. Getting into the Shaolin temple isn't very hard, it's quite comercialised now. The Admin at the forum that i linked earlier has trained there. Just remember that you're not learning original shaolin kung fu, i'm pretty sure that was lost when the original temple was burned down... You'll still be learning some good kung fu. |
